L41 8'4x31 simnsup - Good for Foiling?
« on: January 26, 2018, 02:57:02 PM »
I see lots of people putting a foil on L41 boards.  Not sure why though I suspect it is the nose  Anyway I found a L41 for  $400.  Is this a good board for learning on?

Thanks

Yes and no. Depends a bit on the particular model I think, and probably your balancing capability. I converted my L41 to foil and started using it a few days ago. I had a lot of trouble with lateral stability, I think it's because the step rails on mine don't provide much buoyancy on the perimeter. At least that's my guess. At any rate, I had to deal with that plus the foil and somehow get my feet into the right position. I think a footstrap in the front might help, but I got frustrated and went to Hi Tech and bought a Jimmy Lewis 8'5" hover craft. It made a big difference. Today in my 2 and a half-th day of foiling I got two rides about 50 feet long.

Onward and upward--I hope.

I'd say for 400 bucks you'd probably have a pretty good starter board that might even be good for the longer haul. You'll drop another couple of hundred getting a good installation of a Tuttle box, and then you need a foil. But the JL I bought was about $1500. With my two-pack GoFoil, I'm suddenly more than three grand into this with no real end in sight, and I'm back firmly at the kook level.

The more I learn about foiling the I realize how little I know.

I already had 8'8" and 8'4" simsup, so it was cheap and easy decision to put tuttles in.  Also I was comfortable on these boards and know them well.

I'm not ready for a foil specific board yet.  Seeing these boards up close I suspect they will both help with learning and allow more advanced maneuvers.   At the same time might out grow it really fast, these guys have gone through several boards and dropped down a lot in size.

I suggest if have money to burn then get foil specific board.
Otherwise the affordable simsup sounds good, especially at half the price and will probably have good resell value if you outgrow it.
Aloha, I welcome and appreciate all responses of positivity and good feeling.

Thanks all.

I really want to get a foil specific board but I think maybe ill get the foil, grab a wavestorm sup,  visit ACE Hardware and save myself the visit to Stretch until I'm certain it makes sense to foil around Santa Cruz area.  So much kelp here.

By the time you get a wavestorm to work you'd be well past the cost of that L41. I swapped out with Bill Boyum (headmount) today with my JL and GoFoil. He had previously tried my L41 and did a lot better than I did with it. Today I did as well as he did and it was clear to both of us that the L41 worked better for him. I think since I am not a lifelong surfer that my instincts are not as deeply ingrained. Boyum is, and his are.

The L41 is a particularly good choice since it's a sims bottom profile, meaning flat on the bottom with a little non-continuous (probably not a real word) rocker in the nose and a little more in the tail. Kind of ideal for a foil.

L41, my foamie thread is about a prone board and a likely failure as well. Just experimenting but know that I'm learning on a Simmons SUP from an L41 design. At that price you can always sell it and get your money back. Especially with a foil mount in it.

There are spots in SC if you know where to look.  Generally high tide only but that's when it's least crowded anyway.  I've been flying on the Eastside this past week during the high tide mornings.

I just picked up a used gofoil kai 120. I'm going to use dual tracks and a tuttle plate adapter on my 7'10" x2 sup.

I see med to high tide with swell as the only time doable around here.

How do you get through the kelp?  I can't see entering at the statute at Indicators or the stairs at steamers as both have a defensive line of kelp.  Cowells would work.  Or the middle of Its.  In all 4 places the goal is to get to a place to foil which is outside or out into the bay.

Anyone foil at Manresa?

$400 bucks it's a no brainer.  The L41 boards are great foil boards to learn on.  Once you get your foiling to a more advanced level you can switch out to a foil specific board.  Right now there are some great advancements being made in the foil only boards designs.  You will have your hands full for a while during the learning stage.  An L41 will work perfectly for a trainer.
L41 SIMSUP S4 - 7'4" x 30 1/4" x 4 1/2" 112L
L41 SIMSUP S5 - 7'6" x 27 1/2" x 4 3/16" 106L
L41 SIMSUP S4 - 7'8" x 31"x 4 1/2" 122L - Modded w/ a King's TUT Tuttle box and using a King's foil.
L41 SIMSUP S4 - 7'10" x 30 1/4" x 4 1/2" 120L
Starboard Whopper - 10' x 34" x 4 1/3" 171L - w/ FCS GL-1 fins

I now have 1,200+ waves on the L41 mostly on Kai Foil.  Two days on the IWA - WOW!

No limitations, other than I don't know what I don't know.  My first 2 days on the IWA the faces were 6 to 9 feet.   Super heavy front foot, eventually got the flights down.  I will do a separate write up on the IWA but ZERO learning curve.  First wave was 200+ yards.  Average flights on the IWA 26 waves @ 176 yards per ride.  The only reason the average wasn't higher was because I over flew the foil about 5 times and ate sh-t 60+ yards into blistering flights.

Today 11 waves at 192 yards per wave.  The paddle back out is getting abusive because THE RIDES ARE SO DARN LONG.  Still flying the L41.

Might be pulling the trigger on an Easy Foiler.  Then I'll have something to compare to.  But until then THE L41 ROCKS.

My foiling journey has had a few starts and stops.  Stopped at this point due to distractions with prone and sup surfing.  I just picked up this used L41 Simsup, good deal i thought..  I really like the outline of this shape.  I took it out (SUP only) in the building Fabio swell, was not a great first session on the board.  But from what I have read from others, these shapes take a bit to get used to.

Anyway, my plan is to put a tuttle box in this to continue my foiling journey.  I didnt notice it too much when I bought it but the deck is compressed with some foot wells where the prior heavier owners obviously compressed it.  No glass cracks just deck depression and a bit of delam.

Just wondering if this bad for a Tuttle Box install?  thought that when they were doing the install, maybe fix the delam too.

Thanks for your advise.
