Foil through shallow shorebreak - looking for tips
« on: January 03, 2018, 01:25:03 PM »
Ok, so if anyone can help me with some ideas here. Or more detailed info?

I've been used to surfing in Hawaii with clear and relatively easy channels to paddle out in and I was much more in the water so my balance was on point when ever I got to waves.

In Nor Cal it seems waves are much more beach breaks with closer period waves and so access on boards that are undersized is harder (think OB). Now that I have a foil it adds another dimension. Accessing waves outside when the shorebreak hits you in shallow waters. I saw Kai's / Naish video about turning the board upside down until you reach shoulder deep waves. Has anyone tried it?

Tips would be much appreciated.

With the 55cm mast it’s no issue, even in beach break, to at least walk to waist deep water, then jump on board and paddle. Board paddles through shore break easy.

I turn the board and foil upside down all the time to paddle over shallow reefs, it works well but I never tried it through shore break, that could be dangerous as the foil could hit you.
So if you can walk it out to waist deep water and then jump on and paddle hard that would probably work best.

Dwight, the shorebreak is pretty intense with the short period waves. I really need to find a good spot. I found a nice wave at OB, but shit getting out will be a little nightmare until I can lose some weight. :(
The waves are just too big here now.

Robert. Do you guys do any kind of lessons? Meetups? Board rentals? I've watched all your vids...look at Jeffs stuff on FB too. I'm (hopefully) heading to Oahu second week of Feb. I guess I can take it in private. :-)

Tautolgies, we have a SUP training group that meets every Wednesday afternoon, ask to join this FB group to see the  updates:

For details and to sign up for the weekly newsletter:

Blue Planet currently does not offer foil lessons or rentals as I'm concerned our insurance rates would go through the roof.

I have several friends though that offer foiling lessons: Jeff Chang (foil behind jet ski first), Sam P'ae and Leleo Kinimaka.  I highly recommend getting lessons, it will allow you learn much faster and safer.  Let me know if you want contact information.
