Meetup - Doheny or San Onofre (January 23-26)
« on: January 08, 2018, 04:19:08 PM »
I'm going to be staying in Dana Point for a few days if anyone wants to meet up or could advise some spots to go to? I went to Doheny last time and had fun, planning on exploring around in San Clemente/San Onofre this time.

PM me when you are on your way. I won't be water worthy (post surgery), but I can show you some spots. I could bring my camera and take a few surf pic's. I just need an excuse to go to the beach even though I can't surf till probably mid February :(
It's not overhead to me!

Sounds good, will do. I'm seeing the water temp is in the 60's, if air temp is in the 80's, think it's do-able with a 1mil top/boardshorts, or should I pack the 3/2?

Pack the 3/2, you'll need it in the mornings.  I wear a 3/2 full in the morning and a 2 mil long sleeve spring suit other times when the air temp is 65F+.  I only wear a vest in the winter if it is a really nice warm afternoon (75F+ and no wind).

Anywhere decent for SUP surf in Laguna Beach? Trying to decide between staying there or using Marriott Points at the one beside Doheny. I guess Doheny is 10 minutes away, just trying to make sure the wife has some stuff around her to do.

Not really. Pretty much a rocky shore break the whole way. What gaps of sandy beach there are, aren't worth trying to surf. There are a few little spots, but there will be short boarders there. Once you see DoHo and SanO you'll get it. My brother just stayed at the very new http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/snasj-residence-inn-dana-point-san-juan-capistrano/?scid=bb1a189a-fec3-4d19-a255-54ba596febe2 He said it was nice.
It's not a resort feel, more average hotel. It's close to Doheny, but not really walking distance with a board. The 'Laguna Cliff's Marriott is not in Laguna. It's in Dana Point Harbor overlooking Doheny. You can easily walk down the hill with your board from there and you'll be on the beach in 2 minutes. It's got a nice restaurant plus central to the harbor which is nice to walk around with even more restaurants.

Are SUPs still restricted to Dogpatch at San Onofre?

Yep... to surfer's right of the lined up O-K signs on the hill.  Move too far left and you get the blow horn call of shame.

Thanks

And at Doheny, do SUPs have to be south of the beach itself? ...south of the creek?

Yeah, I saw it last time I was there. I'll probably just stay there so I'm close by and can walk/short drive back to the room to hang out with the wife, or she can walk down to the beach.

Packing the 3/2, might try and sweet-talk/offer beers to someone to hold on to it for a week while I'm in Fiji

Yes, south of the hammer is OK @ Doho.  It is not enforced as heavily in the winter so you can surf north of the hammer if so inclined and no surfers are in that area.  I wouldn't recommend this though, let the beginners have their area and stay south of the hammer.

I got the call of shame my first time out there when I didn't know the rule of law.  "Sweepers, please move south of the hammer"

Actually, We've move a little north of Dog Patch because the parking lot is gone at Dog Patch. We're lining up with the Volleyball courts at sort-of South Old Mans. Dog Patch is now mostly Foilers, SUP and prone.

APPST, pm me. I live right down the street from either Hotel.

Hey APPST_ Adam,
Nice meeting you today. To bad I couldn't get out and surf with you. Couple more weeks of healing and I'll be out there. What perfect weather and classic waist high SanO mush, but fun.
Here are a few pictures I got of you. I'll have to get a better lens for shooting surfing.
