SUP on the San Diego River???

I am always looking for new places  (with calm flat water) in San Diego to go SUP'ing.

I have always wondered about SUP'ing on the San Diego River .... the section about 1 east of the beach that runs parallel to Rt. 8 and his near Sea World.

It looks like there is a lot of water to paddle on, but never see anyone on it.

Is it legal???   And is is safe???  I know there are water health  concerns with San Diego River section that runs through Mission Valley.

No, it's basically a sewer, that's why you don't see anyone paddling on it.

 San Diego has two enormous calm bays,  fairly calm water off of lajolla shores and the cove.  You can paddle in the Aqua Hedionda Lagoon in Carlsbad ( the water stinks, and it's polluted but not as bad as San Diego River estuary).  Also Ocean Side Harbor.

It is not legal either, all that area East of the first bridge is a protected Tern nesting ground.
