Done in by my middle toe
« on: December 23, 2017, 01:59:21 PM »
Sometime around the first of December I surfed in really close to shore at LJShores in Lajolla, I was turning back over the wave and planning on kicking out when a very large foam pile hit me coming from another angle.  I went flying and got pounded a bit by the board, when I paddled back out i noticed my middle toe hurt pretty bad, but i kept surfing and cleaned it out with soap and water and put some antibiotic cream on it and did not pay much attention to the smashed nail  it for about a week.  In the meantime i woke up one morning and the tip was swollen twice the normal size and there was a huge blister full of puss.  I headed into the doctor and she drained the puss and gave me an antibiotic.  I had a reaction to the antibiotic that felt like I was having a stroke, now my face is swollen and  I can't move many of the muscles in the left side of my face.  Two more procedures on the toe, one to remove the toenail, and more antibiotics for resistant bacteria.  Still is not getting better very quickly.  If i lived in ages before antibiotics, they probably would have cut off my foot by now.   Enjoy the surf, and treat those toes with respect.   Seems like I always get hurt on tiny waves.

Foot infections can be a nasty affair.... I hope yours clears up soon and the new antibiotics are kinder to you.

Over 3 weeks is a long time for sure...keep your injury clean and protected until it is finished tormenting you!

I hear your pain... I also had my big toenails removed.... interesting set of nerves in that area  :o

YIKES! Nice big toe horror story! Heal up and get back out there, Dart! I know it's kind of sick, but do you have any photos of your toe in it's state of effed-up-ness?
One could go into a mall in Kansas and ask a teenager "What is a surfer looking for?, and the answer will always be, "The perfect wave"

Man, I was just griping to my wife about my toe. Accidentally dropped in on a guy and caught it at the last minute and bent my toe over and separated the nail a bit at the cuticle 2 weeks ago. Bight break anything but it hurt pretty bad for 4 days or so.

Still sore and a little swollen, but nothing like you had. Get well man and yes, water infections are no joke!

2 days after this, half my foot was bruised and swollen. This is right after. Argh

Strange timing. The whack I got on my shin isn't getting any better, in fact it looks infected and I'm headed to urgent care to have it looked at. The circulation in my legs isn't all it could be, which is why I wear compression socks and tights a lot. It's likely I have a clot and that can lead to infection even without an open wound.

Seadart, I wouldn't rule out the possibility of a minor stroke, though any clot coming from your extremities winds up in your lungs, not your brain.

Wasn't a clot, but it is an infection. No broken skin, but compromised circulation plus rasty bruise = phlebitis, infection of a vein. Problem is that there isn't anything to culture, it's all internal, so the doc is guessing. A strong antibiotic to combat streptococcus and an antibiotic cream to for some of the other likely suspects. I'm out of the water for 48 hours, so of course, Kanaha and Ho'okipa look good.
