L41 Popdart
« on: September 08, 2018, 12:54:10 PM »
After a few months in the queue, my new board finally arrived.
I ordered a Popdart from Kirk at L41 in Santa Cruz.

I ended up deciding on a 8’8 x 30 @ 129 Liters
With a wetsuit I’m 200lbs, 5’11 and an beginner/intermediate sup surfer.

I’ve owned a few factory production boards between 9’6 and 8’2.

I was looking for something durable yet light weight, functional and beautiful, and a size that would challenge me but not wear me out just trying to stay standing.

After a week in Tofino, I’m extremely happy and would highly recommend L41 to anyone. I’m particularly impressed with the solid construction. I kind of assumed that custom board would turn out to be a fragile board. I chose carbon rails which make this feel bombproof.

I’m traveling with my new baby to Nosara in 10 days.
I’m looking for packaging advice.  I’ve had damage before when traveling to Costa Rica with a board. I’ve tried wrapping the rails foam pipe insulation. And I’ve just built an envelope out of aluminum bubble wrap to slide my board into before it goes in a padded board bag.

Any other advice would be appreciated.

Thanks, Tyler in seattle

Foam on the rails for sure. It's also a good idea to pack several paddles in the bag with the board as stiffeners and deck protectors. I generally stuff everything that can fit into the bag as padding--wetsuit, some clothes, leashes, etc. Of course, if they lose your board they lose it all.
Foote 10'4X34", SIC 17.5 V1 hollow and an EPS one in Hood River. Foote 9'0" x 31", L41 8'8", 18' Speedboard, etc. etc.

Great looking board Tyler... Kirk does nice work!

Enjoy and report!

I trust a good bag and don't load it up because I want it to stay within baggage weight limits.
A lightweight bubble wrap works fine if you want some added protection.

If they want to destroy it, nothing will protect it.  ;)

Ha! We have a bit in common Tyler.  I surf Tofino quite a bit.  My first custom SUP was an L41 (an ST...loved it!).  And I travel to surf Nosara from time to time.

For travel, I buy a sheet of the foam insulation from Home Depot (I think it's 8' x 4') and cut it in half (and tape the edges to reduce mess).  I put one piece on top and one on the bottom of the board.  I also wrap the rails in pipe insulation (also from Home Depot).  It's a light weight setup overall and protects the board really well. I've traveled to Costa Rica, SoCal and Mexico with that setup and I've never had a ding.

Nice board. The L41's are built solid and great looking shapes.

How did the trip to Nosara go? trip report? photos?
