SW Florida Downwinder
« on: December 11, 2017, 06:34:58 AM »
Me and FloridaWindSUP did a downwinder on Saturday. Our part of the world is very calm normally and we aren't blessed by the winds. So any time we have a wind above 20mph we are lucky. So this past Saturday we had cold front coming through and wind forecast called for 20-30mph with 5-6 ft seas. When we got to the beach the wind was crap probably 10mph and I was sort of skeptical but James talked me into going to our launch point and just going for downbreezer, hoping that the winds will kick in. The worst that could happen - 12 miles of flatwater paddling :)  We went and it was miraculously good. Started out in the rain and slow wind but then at mile marker 5 the wind really started to blow. I felt it was blowing well above 30 with mountain swells coming through. Some of the drops were intense. I was on my SIC Bullet V2 and James was on his Fanatic Falcon. Unfortunately my best moments were ruined by droplets on the GoPro lens. Tried lots of things but nothing seems to work from keeping droplets forming. So if you have a solution that works for you please share.

Great job, Greg! You've crossed the state so many times to join us on the east coast, Lmk next time and I'll see if I can cross and join you on the west. Jorge

Lookin' good.  The sound of the big single concave is so distinctive.  Fun times.  :)

that was nice, thanks for sharing.
Had my 2nd dw (10km) this weekend at half that wind speed (17mph) and was fun for a beginner like me.

Very nice.
Especially t-shirts in December, there is something to be said about that while I am waiting for FedEx to find my SupSkin :-)
Ideally if one could have a drone tethered and following the board, it would be great to see everything that is happening.

Thanks JEG. I do like downbreezers - you get to practice technique and slower pace is beneficial when you start. You need to learn to go slow before you go fast.

Luc, drone would have been so cool. I am sure it would have been great educational tool and also analyzing your technique weak and strong sides. Plus great footage.

Thanks Eagle. Yes the sound is distinctive. But I hopped on the bullet after a break ( have been using Allstar for DW) and I fell in love with it again.

Good Job Greg, I see now what I missed. It turned out to be a good day after all even with the rain and all.
Next time I'll join for sure.

Have a Rain-X and XClear on the way so we can test and see if it'll take care of the droplets.
Thank god you didn't take the Trifecta with you on that run ;)
in progress...

Cool DW video. And I didn't find the water droplets to be that bad at all.

Thanks for sharing your video.

I am using Rain-X and for some reason gulf water still sticks to it somehow. You are right about trifecta! Gosh, my worst nightmares - broken paddle or leash.

Thanks NW, I have left out the footage where droplets completely ruined it, unfortunately bigger bumps were left out  :(
