Weight of SUP pad
« on: December 09, 2017, 02:29:36 PM »
I was wondering how much weight you might save from removing your deck pad ....say a pad that is about 3/4 length of a 10 x 30 Board? Thanks

Some pads are heavier than others. I have no precise weights but I do have some Sunova pad material laying around to estimate.

Sunova pads are extremely light. Probably less than half a pound I would guess on a ten foot board. Jimmy Lewis pads are pretty light as well.

To me it wouldn't be worth removing the pad just to save a few ounces. No way would I ever put wax on my boards.

You would be suprised  at the weight, a pad on a 10ft board is approx 400 to 800g depending on size and that's dry.

Ha ha.....I put wax on all my pads.....have done that for years ......improves the grip a lot. Never tried a sup without a pad but never had an issue with just wax on Surfboards so guess it would be fine.

I wax my pads too. Wax them and set them in the sun. Only need to do it once.

There used to be some very light pads, but they seem to have left the biz. And there were some very heavy pads that took up water--also gone. Now they all seem to be about the same weight as the NSI stuff, which is about 4oz per foot for a 28" wide pad.

If you're concerned about weight you can halve that by doing a mosaic and get a better grip, or use the RSPro hexatraction which weighs about nothing. It doesn't give any padding, so your feet might suffer a bit, but the traction is good. It's even better if you wax it, and it holds wax for a very long time, eliminating the usual bare spots under your feet. I had a few boards that I resisted putting pads on, but having two very slippery spots right where you stand the most isn't a great thing.

I could see waxing the pad of a board that I plan to keep, but the way I go through boards it's not a good idea. It would look ugly and ruin the resale value.
