How to transport foil board on bike rack
« on: December 05, 2017, 05:25:29 PM »
I copied Beasho's bike rack  that he posted a few years ago and have been using it since then (love that thing).  However, I'm not sure how things are going to work now that I'm switching to foiling.

Has anyone seen a bike rack design that allows board+foil transport?  My foil board will be 8'+

Thanks

The foil fitting on the bike rack was a big part of my decision to foil.  I wasn't going back to using my car.  Good news was it fits with a bit of Jerry Rigging.

Note the windsurfing batten with surf ankle cuff to keep foil off back tire.  Works great.

And you thought your Tuttle box damage was from use in the water? I imagine a few bumps along the way didn't help matters ::)
It's not overhead to me!
8'8" L-41 ST and a whole pile of boards I rarely use.

Pretty slick. But I bet people step aside when they see you coming. Samurai Beasho. Step aside or lose your head.

This rig is SUPER Capable.

I had a friend in town as well as my daughter.  How to get 3 boards to the beach and NOT use a car?

1) Build a new rack - For myself after the wind ripped off my old rack and it was re-built.  New rack uses schedule 80 PVC
2) Put the Old rack on my back-up Electric Bike
3) Teach my daughter how to ride with the rack & board - Basically say "Here ride this"
4) Double up on the new rack with 2 boards

Problem solved.

Round trip from my house to the Beach is 7 miles.  12 minutes one way to the sand launch.  There is no parking where we surf, its a 3/4 mile walk from the lot, just a nice post to lock up the bicycles.

Surf was great over Thanksgiving.

Here was Ruby, my daughter, taking off with Jeff Clark GoPro'ing from behind.

The second shot she is dropping in on Haley Fiske who was GoFoil'ing . . . so many Go's.

Great pics.

How is the batten attached to the seat?

I applaud (and admire) your commitment Beasho.

Although I'm sure you mentioned it before, it never clicked for me that you are doing 7 miles bike + 3/4 on foot each way.  I really have to find a no-car solution to my easy trek to the beach.  Now, if I could just convince my subconscious.

You were always pretty cool Beasho, having mavs as your home break, electric bikes, MacGyvering nearly everything you touch... but Ruby has level of cool that garners sponsorships.  What an awesome kid.

The seat was a great $12 purchase off Amazon to replace the stock, Rock seat the bike came with.

I just drilled a hole through the back plastic and butted the batten up against the metal mount.  The batten extends all the way to the front of the seat, for modularity.  Covered with special white duct tape for aesthetics.  Might even have a zip-tie or tow holding it all in place.

Closer shot here.  Since this picture the skinny end of the batten snapped off and I had to drill a hole through the batten and afix the with 200 lbs braided fishing line to the metal collar swivel.

Here is my take on Besho's bike rack.  I only have to travel 1/2 a mile or so one way to my break so I opted to reduce the weight rather then have a bomber rack.  I use angle brackets at two stress point and a screw in each fitting, on both ends.

Glad you posted pics of your bike rack years ago Beasho.  Thanks!
