Need Rack Advice
« on: November 29, 2017, 02:08:49 PM »
It’s time to organize my toys so I can get more toys. So far I have two 12’6” race boards, one Sup Surf, one Sunfish and one Kayak. Don’t tell my husband but that am thinking of getting a 14 to keep up with the boys( ok old men but whatever). I have one half of the two car garage to work with. So....should I put in a wall rack or fabricate something on casters? Any suggestions on spacing of levels? Anyone have plans they want to share or better yet come build it for a free Florida vacation.

If you have money to spend, check out Suspenz racks.  They're great!

Sunfish & kayak can go outside or hang from beams depending on usage.  I've used 2 x 4's and 3/4" PVC for my surf & paddleboard racks for years.  I use a hole saw and tap the cut pieces of PVC in with a little Gorilla Glue.  For the heavier boards I'll put a small dowel or electrical conduit inside the PVC to stiffen it up.  The pictured rack cost about $30 in materials to build.

Capo's is great and an easy build. I made one similar (but with 3/4" steel pipe). PVC with dowels will be cheaper and easier and don't require wrapping with foam to protect boards.

I'm assuming you don't want to rack the Sunfish. It's so much wider and heavier that i would store it separate from the boards. We had a small hand trailer for ours that it was always on when it wasn't in the water on an outhaul.

This is the one I bought from www.Storeyourboard.com.

Well made, easy to assemble and not too pricey. Wall mount for 3 boards is USD99, and floor mount (which I bought) is $259.99 for 6 boards with free shipping..

What Capo [di tutti capi] said.

You can also use round wood poles. (same same as plastic minus the petrochemical effect. I hate plastic.)

Ditto, 2x4's and some galvanized pipe I had laying around. I put pipe insulation on the pipes to provide cushion for the boards and make it easier to slide them out without scratching.
