"Missiles" Downwinder - Crossing State lines NY - NJ - Vid
« on: November 27, 2017, 07:02:49 PM »
Another Sunday and the wind lined perfectly up for a new downwinder we’ve named “Missiles” due to the place is ends up in a small cove at Missile Monument in Guardian Park on Sandy Hook, New Jersey.

This 9.3mile / 15km run crosses the New York / New Jersey State line and starts at Great Kills Park on Statin Island, NY and works in a NW wind.

Conditions started fairly mellow and built up the further offshore we got from Statin Island. We left as the tide turned and was coming in, which made the water messed up as we neared Sandy Hook but some great long glides were had.

Visibility was perfect, as was the temperature and we were actually overheating in our 5mm wetsuits.

I see that your racks on the Tacoma are working with your 16' board. Probably don't need the hitch mount after all.

Laszlo.. Hah! You are right. The racks on the roof work well, mainly because it means the boards don't stick out over the end of the truck and I can get them in my garage and manoeuvre without worrying about crushing them into a wall or something! Although for long distance at speed and multiple boards the hitch mount seems the better bet as boards are more secures so I'm keeping it.

Nice video. Looked like very good DW wind and water conditions. And I'm familiar with Sandy Hook, NJ. My late dad, when he was in the US Army, was stationed at Fort Hancock at the tip of Sandy Hook. Fort Hancock was located next to the Coast Guard station.

Thanks for sharing the video.

Good edit Off-Shore. With the sun and all I almost forgot it was still winter.
Good thing is was Sunday, almost no boat traffic. One less thing to worry about.

We can now officially call the group the "Tri-State Downwinders" what do you think?

Really my go to fin these days. Especially on the BP Bump Rider, it made all the difference.
When conditions gets rough it's a real gem in fighting broaching and recovering stability.

Very nice!  Thanks for sharing.  Though my excuses for not paddling seem pretty weak when you guys are running ~40 mile shuttles to paddle in 5mm of rubber.  Very impressive commitment!
