Introducing the "Sleepy Hollow Downwind Run"
« on: November 08, 2017, 12:44:44 PM »
Yet Another co-production of "off-shore" and myself in our continuous effort to map-out the
various downwind runs in our area. This time we ventured out to the Hudson Valley to explore the
Hudson River downwind opportunities on a southerly wind.

We call this run "The Sleepy Hollow Downwind Run". It started at "Philipse Manor" Beach Club
Just off the train Station. A nice protected spot we managed to score as it is usually closed this time around.
End point was "Georges Island Park" at Montrose where we had a boat ramp.

The run started mellow and wind picked-up towards the middle supplying us with nice size bumps even though
we were running with the tide.

We used off-shore's boards -  The Blue Planet 2017 Bump Rider 14'x27" and the SIC Bullet V1

in progress...

Nice downwind video. After watching your footwork on the 27" width of the Bump Rider, if I would ever get the chance to do a downwind in a sup, no matter the model or manufacturer, I think I would have go with a 28" wide DW board.

Thanks for sharing your DW video.
Blue Planet Duke: 10'5" x 32" x 4.5" @ 190 Liters (2 Dukes)
Sup Sports Hammer: 8'11" x 31" x 4" @ 140 Liters
SUP Sports One World: 11'1" x 30" x 4.5" @ 173 Liters
CJ Nelson Parallax: 9'3" x 23 1/2" x 3 3/16" @ 78.8 Liters (prone surfing longboard; Thunderbolt Technologies build in Red construction)

Noticed that you guys switched boards for awhile. It would be interesting to hear your comparisons of those two 14 footers in downwind conditions.

At about 2:00, you were in some sizable swell!  Scary exit too.

I have to say it is fun having someone here to go pioneer new downwind runs in the area especially someone who is as enthusiastic as Burchas. We did talk about combining our footage, but ended up not doing so.... so here is what it looked like from the Off-Shore perspective on Youtube (where he can hide his terrible downwind stance  ;D)

https://youtu.be/9KyyRVO_TRM

This was a fun run, and the wind picked up so much that when we got to the end we saw whole branches had being ripped from the trees (still in full leaf) and we had to position the car in a clear area away from the trees to load the boards safely. The windsurfers who we'd seen getting rigged up when we dropped off the car were packing up when we arrived back as the wind had got too strong... Being a southerly wind, it was warm and you can see whilst I was in a 3mm farmer john wetsuit and slow cooking, Burchas was correctly dressed. It's amazing that it seems we've now gone from summer to the depths of winter with freezing conditions forecast with a northerly this weekend.

Noticed that you guys switched boards for awhile. It would be interesting to hear your comparisons of those two 14 footers in downwind conditions.

The Blue Planet Bump Rider is much lighter and is narrower and has less thick rails and less rocker than the SIC Bullet V1 TWC. I prefer the Bump Rider as I feel I can get it on the plane and maintain it longer that I can the Bullet with less effort. However for this particular run, the heavier Bullet performed really well, and I actually preferred it. It may have been the shorter period windswell that the bigger rocker worked in, or the additional weight that allowed it to power through onto the next glides but I felt more comfortable on the Bullet on this run for some reason.

Ichapod... Our deepest apologies. Burchas and I were actually planning a 15 mile / 24 km Port to Port Run which is from Port Jefferson on Long Island to Bridgeport in Connecticut (see map below), which meant taking the ferry with our boards and paddling back, but we could not make the times work within our schedules and switched to this run last minute. Now we know that it is a good one, you are at the top of our list to call!

I'm was very glad we didn't give up on that day and went for it. We already called it quits due to the
complexity of the Port to Port run. The funny part was we both came up with this run at same time and within
30 minutes I had the route figured out as I did scout the area before and pulled out some pics from the archives.

Ichabood, I was thinking about you as we were making our way to the launch site but everything was up in the air,
and given it was mid-week 10:30 am and I wasn't even sure the run will work well with the tide changing, we decided
to wait and see once we knew it's worth it. Now we know.

The end section was a bit sketch. I caught a nice steep bump just as I entered the little bay and I had to bail as
I was coming hot into the boat ramp. So bummed the GoPro died 10 minutes to the end, it would have been a
really nice addition to the video.

Below is the end point on a better day...
in progress...

Thanks. Keep me in mind, guys. There's a great run too if we get a northerly through the Highlands. The wind tends to funnel there and get stronger than the general forecast. You could do a launch at Cold Spring to Peekskill, and that's a good 11 miles through the mountains.
