Starboard Atlas 12'0
« on: October 29, 2017, 10:01:16 PM »
Anyone ride one? I'm looking for something to cruise around on. I ride a NAISH Hokua 7'0 for my surf board.

If not an Atlas does anyone have suggestions on a similar board that's 12 ft?

I'm looking to pick one up but having trouble finding it in Hawaii. If anyone has leads on how I can get one in Hawai that would be nice. Thanks.

Will you be wanting to surf this board or just paddle around? Tons of choices either way.

Prob both. Would prob surf it about 50 percent of the time. Do you think the avanti would be a better choice for that?

The Atlas and Avanti are for heavy riders. If you can stand on a 7' board, they probably have way more volume and stability than you need and they won't surf very well. How much do you weigh?

The Starboard Blend might suit you better. I had one for a couple years and it's a fine all around board. I would often do five or ten mile paddles with it, sometimes in fairly choppy conditions. You can even do mini downwinders and it surfs reasonably well.

If you want an all around board that leans a little more towards surfing, you might also consider the Starboard Drive. It's fine for flatwater and surfs great.

If you think you'll be into doing distance in moderately choppy conditions, the Blend would be faster and more stable.

If you are just casually cruising around the harbor and still want great surfing performance, the Drive is all you need.

I'm about 240 lbs.

I surf the 7'0 Hokua but this one is for surfing with a kid and just messing around on a small roller.

I'm excited to try downwind. Thanks for your input!

You obviously have incredible balance. If you think you might enjoy downwinding, consider getting a downwind board. They have plenty of volume and make great all around flatwater/touring boards. Some of them surf pretty well too. The Jimmy Lewis M-14 is a good example. It has all the stability and volume that you need, it's a fantastic downwind/ocean board and will be ten times faster than the Atlas. I owned one for two years. I did downwinders, long distance touring and surfed it quite a bit. Now I have the M-12'6.

I just checked your forum history. You started standup surfing in 2008. With that much experience, you should be giving me advice on boards.  8)

Which island? I'd guess Hawaii or Kuai or you'd have kind of automatic choices. If you're up for a little trip, visit Blueplanet on Oahu, or go to Maui and visit SIC and demo some Jimmy Lewis boards. You can surf a downwind board pretty well, and they're great for goofing around with kids. The only thing they kind of suck at is flatwater racing. Too much rocker.
Foote 10'4X34", SIC 17.5 V1 hollow and an EPS one in Hood River. Foote 9'0" x 31", L41 8'8", 18' Speedboard, etc. etc.
