Samsung GearSport for paddle tracking?
« on: October 27, 2017, 11:41:47 AM »
Anybody using or thinking about getting the new Samsung GearSport watch?
It looks like it might be just the ticket. It's waterproof and has hr monitoring...even when swimming. I assume that one could put the Endomondo app on it as well as myFitnessPal which are both apps I enjoy.
It also comes with wireless charging which I also have enjoyed with my S7 phone.
If it will broadcast my hr to my Garmin GPS 78sc that I mount on my board I'll be seriously interested in giving it a try.

I've had my eye on the Gear S3. It has cell service and altimeter which are not available on the Sport. I like to track my skiing stats so the altimeter is key. I have a Garmin Fenix 3 currently.

But the Sport has 50m water resistance vs. only 1.5m for the S3. So the Sport would be better for surfing Mavericks or Jaws. And it costs $100 less.

The Gear Sport does have the following sensors onboard:
accelerometer
barometer (altitude?)
gyro
hr
light

Onboard GPS/Glonass for navigation (and tracking)

Might work for you?

Best if you Google what 50m water resistance actually means, it might not be sufficient for your needs.

One thing that is helpful when considering a purchase of something like this:  you can download the manual to see just what all can be done with this smartwatch. Pretty cool!
Download direct from Samsung website if interested.

The Gear Sport is not for scuba diving.....but it ought to survive a few spills off the board I would hope!!

I used a Samsung Gear S3 Frontier for about 4 months. GREAT device for smart notifications and even taking phone calls when connected with Bluetooth. Heart rate tracking seemed accurate, but the GPS was WAY off! The GPS eventually quit working, so I got another S3... the GPS on the second one was no better than the first from what I could tell. I ended up bringing it back when I read about the Garmin Vivoactive 3. The Vivoactive 3 has been great for tracking my SUP activities and SUP surfing. But I missed the a ability to reply to texts, and get phone call notifications. The Vivoactive 3 does smart notifications, but not as well (which I kind of expcected). I heard that the Samsung Gear S3 Frontier with LTE connectivity is MUCH better at tracking by GPS. Not sure why that would be though.... but I figured I'd buy the LTE version and compare. Have not done the comparison yet.... but I am enjoying the S3.

So you will be comparing a new S3 with LTE to your Vivoactive 3?  That will be interesting.
I am particularly interested in hr accuracy during paddling and whether the device can broadcast the hr (via the Ant+ sensor) to a remote mounted Garmin GPS 78sc...and still display distance, speed, stroke rate ect on the watch.
Can you read the watchface easily in bright sunlight?
Can the device run the Endomondo App without having your smartphone with you? (GPS independent of phone)
