Foil SUP, courtesy of Big Oil

I was amused to see this paid content from the American Petroleum Institute featured in the Washington Post online, taking credit for foil surfing.

Pretty slick site from these oil guys!  :D

Kai Lenny, Alex Aguera, Laird Hamilton, Dave Kalama . . .

Who gets the credit for this one?

Same thing happened with kitesurfing. Maui boys get credit for "inventing" it even though it clearly started in Europe years before. Don't get me wrong, there is plenty of innovation coming out of HI. Do we really give a shit what Big Oil thinks about it? I'm personally glad that plastic and carbon have been invented for all my toys to be lighter and stronger. Selfish? Maybe. I don't think any of us would own paddleboards if they were 80 lbs of wood. We would all be surfing Aliya boards. Which would still be cool. Kites would be made of banana leaves, etc.

lol, maybe there's a niche market for "organic" bamboo plank SUPs and banana leaf kites!  :D

BTW, I wasn't hating on Big Oil, just surprised and amused when I took a closer look at the cool SUP Foiling pic on WaPo.com to see "Paid for by the American Petroleum Institute". From carbon fibers to Vaseline, petroleum is involved in a lot of great products.
