First Time out on the "new hip"
« on: October 04, 2017, 03:04:07 PM »
Awesome day in Newport, Oregon today. It's been 3 weeks since I had my right hip replaced.  Today was the first "test paddle" to see how it feels.  Just a little pain still there when first getting up,  but after that it's ok.
Sure felt nice to be back to paddling. Walking with a cane is no fun. Helps too when the weather is awesome. It was in the mid 60's with very little wind. And the icing on the cake.....live crab available on the Chelsea Rose for $8/pound. The 2 lb. crab were excellent. Life is good!!
I would attach a picture,  but it says the file is too large and I don't know how to reduce it.

Good for you. A good friend of mine, who was a pro surfer back in the day had his hips replaced in his early 40's. Some kinda genetic degenerative bone issue. In his 50's now, he still surfs short boards and rides motocross.

As far as the picture resizing, follow my tutorial  ;)

Glad your back on the board!

(Great tutorial TD, but for anyone who still gets stumped resizing photos, just email the photo to yourself selecting a smaller size in the process.  Drag it out to your desktop and you're good to go.)

Another way is to download a resize app like this if on iOS or on some other operating system.  Took me me only a few seconds to download this one just now to test.  Is super fast and mega easy to resize.  Just select size and boom goes into your photo album.  Done.  ;)

So let me see if this works!  My wife used an app called "paint" to reduce the size an then sent it to me via email and then I renamed it and sent it to my Google Drive.

Kind of a roundabout way to do it, but it appears to have worked!  Anyway,  as you can see it was an awesome day on the water in Yaquina Bay, Oregon.  The 2 lb. bay crab we purchased live off the dock from the Chelsea Rose are great!  It's been quite a while since we have enjoyed a fresh crab "fix"! One more day here to paddle and enjoy the weather before heading home. Love the Oregon Coast when you luck out on weather like today!!

Nice looking sup.

I'm just curious. What are the specs of your Imagine sup (length, width, thickness, liters and how much does it weigh)?
Blue Planet Duke: 10'5" x 32" x 4.5" @ 190 Liters (2 Dukes)
Sup Sports Hammer: 8'11" x 31" x 4" @ 140 Liters
SUP Sports One World: 11'1" x 30" x 4.5" @ 173 Liters
CJ Nelson Parallax: 9'3" x 23 1/2" x 3 3/16" @ 78.8 Liters (prone surfing longboard; Thunderbolt Technologies build in Red construction)

Hey Connector,
My wife and I are just on the way home from a car trip down the Oregon coast and into California. Didn't do any SUPing, but did get to stop in Newport for a couple of hours. Is a very beautiful place. We agreed that if we ever do a similar trip again, we would spend more time there.
Also, congrats on your hip replacement!

Amazing to me that a hip replacement takes such a short time to recover from... 3 weeks and back paddling...? I had rotator cuff surgery November 2017 and am still having issues.. Can SUP no problem, took at least 7 months to be able to lift board overhead, but still have fair amount of pain. Hip seems to be such a large joint I'm amazed at the recovery... Still no OC1 mostly from dread of loading overhead on car. Just can't wrap my head around 3 weeks from hip surgery to paddling. I had to go to a Blow Zone just to do my hair for 6 months... : ) Yes I'm a little bit of a girlie girl...

There's a pretty large hip replacement club out on the water in Santa Cruz. Doesn't seem to slow any of the SUPers down except in the post op short run.

That's good to know for us guys getting into that age range, though I am still orthopedically intact at the moment.  I am surprised how much there is in the 50 plus group, but then, I have not pushed things to any kind of extreme limit as an athlete, and had a chair bound occupation.

Nice looking sup.

I'm just curious. What are the specs of your Imagine sup (length, width, thickness, liters and how much does it weigh)?

I bought my Connector used and I think it is a 2014 model. It's about 30 lbs and is 14 x 29 1/4. The later model Connectors are lighter because they incorporated the use of carbon. Imagine makes the new Connector in 2 widths. They also make inflatable versions. I would love to get one of the new Connectors in the narrower (27) inch version because I think it only weighs about 24 lbs. It is a good downwind board but I use it for all-round conditions. I am about 155 lbs and 5ft. 8.  I was told that SIC was involved in designing this board with Dave Kalama. A good combination of expertise !

@connector14

Thanks for the reply back with the info. You and me are the same height, but I'm 10 lbs lighter at 145 lbs. I hear you on that "30 lbs". Carrying a 30 lb sup for a good 75 yards (or more) to some of the places I go is "not fun" especially on a 100 degree F (or more) air temperature day with high humidity.  ;) Especially since I now have two surgically repaired right and left shoulders.

Again, thanks for the reply.
