Man I'm actually good with the low volume. I weigh 140 so it should be ok. The other thing I confirmed is that the length does help stabilize a bit. My 7'5" is way harder due to the pitch. The 9' length made it much easier to deal with the roll as it was really only one axis to deal with. I'm gonna try to dig into that file a bit today and post up some questions on the shape3d thread. Might as well pay the education forward.

140! You're in my ball park (not many of us). I'm 148.  I loved my low-ish volume longboard SUP this summer.  It made what would have been some below average sessions really fun.  Mine is 8'10 x 26.5, 84 L.  I find it more than stable enough in the lineup. I really like the thin rails.

I also had a great session in September SUPing on my friend's big guy longboard (9'0 x 24, 95 L).  It was fun too and very do-able out there (almost too corky, but the narrow width was noticable...in a good way).  My wife has a high volume longboard (8'8 x 23, 78 L).  I tried flat water paddling it and it wasn't bad.  Next time I have a chance to surf it on a calm day, I'm going to give it a try.

(On a relative scale, 84 L for me is like 113 L for someone 200 lbs)

This is what I discovered when I took a 8' x 22.5" Wavestorm surfboard out for a paddle.  Even though it is narrow it was surprisingly stable.

I finished sealing and painting the board.  I have wanted to try a faux resin tint.  I like the result but definitely have some ideas on how I can do it better next time.  Here's a pic of the painted blank and the resin tint that I was trying to emulate ...

Love the look man, this is gonna be a great one.

Surfafrica, I think I'm shooting for almost exactly what you have there. I want mine just under the airline 9.0 limit.

I dropped the board off at Pure Glass in Costa Mesa.  I am going with 6+6S top, 6S bottom, Futures 4+1 fins, no handle, no vent.  It cost a little extra than originally estimated due to the extra thickness and the S glass upgrade.  Total board cost will be $525.    Let the wait begin...

Greedy Beaver In Da House...

Wow, crazy board.  9.5lbs of mini longboard awesomeness.

Balance and paddling
---
It took me a couple of tries to stand initially.  Once I determined the "sweet spot" popping up was not a problem.  Once standing balance was surprisingly effortless.  I thought it would be tippy but it is very stable, probably due to being lower in the water.  It paddles well and has decent glide for a low volume board.  I have been able to stand for the entirety of my sessions.

How it surfs
---
It surfs like a high performance longboard.   At first I tried to surf this board like my 6-1 Bean Bag, the Greedy Beaver was having none of it.  It likes to flow, trim and glide and turns aggressively when you get back on the tail.

Why I don't like this board
---
It surfs like a high performance longboard so I have to recalibrate my shortboard surfing style when riding this board.

Why I like this board
---
It surfs like a high performance longboard so I have to recalibrate my shortboard surfing style when riding this board.   I really like the reduced width and lower volume.  This board will make me a stronger paddler and improve my style and flow.   I have it set up as a thruster right now but am looking forward to riding it as a single fin.

I love it.  I'd just need a much larger mammal.  Like Beaverzilla.

Oh man, looks great.  Might run nice as a quad too with a smaller set of fins.  The colors came out really cool looking.

I agree. The finish is great, the shape is spectacular. You've got me rethinking my whole plan now lol.

The ride report is surprising but if you paddled the wavestorm and dealt with that then I can see how this works for sure. I think more guys should try less width and volume, but keep some length. I'll bet they'd be surprised. The old timers here forget how long they've been standing on these things now. What was impossible a few years back is probably a lot more do-able now.

I was guilty of remembering how tippy a board was but not taking into account that I'd been paddling for like a year when I was on said board. That 24" board felt much better than a 28" board did in 2010. Gotta fight my biases.

Once again, you've raised the bar by lowering the size. ;)

It'll scale nicely, it is very similar to the Infinity New Deal (just smaller).  A 9-0 x 30 x 4 is 126L with 18" @ tail +12", 22" @ N+12".

Thanks :-)

I have a couple of sets of quads I will try out eventually, the Hayden Shapes HS1 / HS2 fronts with HS quad rears.  The HS2 was my favorite fin on the Hypto Krypto so I expect it to feel pretty good on this board.    I put the rear fins closer to the stringer so that the board will have some characteristics of a thruster when riding it as a quad (similar to how Hayden positions the rears on the 5 fin Hypto Krypto).

I am happy with the faux resin tint paint job, especially the light blues and light brown areas.  I went a little too dark on the dark brown rail area.  Lessons learned from painting my last 2 boards:

- lighter colors look better after glassing
- mix up all colors in advance and have extra for final touch up
- use a separate sponge / brush for each color
- mix paint 1:1 with water for easy spreading and application
- sealing the blank with Z-Seal makes paint application a lot easier
- I need a better tool for marking off the rail outline

I agree.  24" is not as bad as thought it would be.   This board has me rethinking what I want my next board to look like.   I definitely want to stay narrow but with less length, maybe a 6-4 x 25 or 6-6 x 24 Omni...

Anon,
Looking great! What software are you using for the renderings?
I have been thinking about something along the lines of the 'Beaverzilla' discussed earlier.
I found a set of paper templates I did a year ago but can't find the CAD to see where they came from.
