Given the "free" time and a little money and that time of year I'd get out my passport and go south, Southern Hemisphere, Costa Rica.

i took 2 trips to CR this summer, great suggestion, but locals said the town is super crowded.

i wish Chicama was closer...........

actual travel to chicama not bad--7hr non stop from ny--1 hr flt to trujillo--then an hour's drive---problem is the connection-- anything shorter than an 8 hr layover was very pricey, when i booked recently---cancelled the trip when i saw the recent NE cycle developing--also dec/jan not the best time for chicama--go to chicama on MSW, click spot guide tab--scroll down to monthly wave consistency chart

might be that if you are booking well out into the future the better-connecting flights arent so prohibitively expensive--fares were appx 800, somwhat last minute, with crap layover, and 1600 with quick connection
