Rocker change to existing board.
« on: October 02, 2017, 11:32:15 AM »
Has anyone out there tried and had any success in inducing more rocker in an existing board? To add insult to injury the board I want to do this with it all carbon.
My head tells me it’s never going to happen as generally carbon has a modulus of elasticity of abot 1.5 so the epoxy resin (at 4.0) would cooperate but not the fiber. Anyone actually try this? If you did get any minuscule amount did it stay? Or revert back to its original curve.

Just curious if supporting the nose and tail and adding considerable weight in the center (or visa versa) letting set for a long period of time would have any effect... looking for maybe an inch increase overall...16’ x25-1/2” board

Hockey players will tell you to take a blow torch to it if you want an illegal curve.   ....but that is probably not advisable for a SUP.

It will result in one of two things

A -  do nothing
B - distroy your board

Do not waste anymore time even considering this it will not work.

Ok...now I’ve definetly got to give it a go  ;)...a 28 lb concrete block on each end gently supported in the center is definitely not going to break it...if it does nothing while being stored no harm no foul. Right?

If you peel the bottom half of the board, you could. You would have to peel it nose to tail, probably just the middle 2/3. Of course you'd have to re-glass it, but you could just use E-glass instead of CF.
It's not overhead to me!
8'8" L-41 ST and a whole pile of boards I rarely use.

It can be done, but not as you describe. I've done it myself, though in the opposite direction--reduced the rocker. Cut slices across the board on the deck through the rail, bend it to the shape you want, fill the gaps with foam (or in your case, just gorilla glue, Sand, glass, surf, decide it's a piece of shit and toss it.

TallDue & PonoBill, the senarios you discribed are some of the first things that danced through my mind. Quickly dismissed them as too much work, rather start with a fresh blank than peel a deck pad, compromise longitudinal strength and add weight. TallDude...even if I peeled the whole bottom the rails would have to go too for it to flex. Then the deck would prestressed in compression...just don’t see any these approaches ending well... ::)

After further contemplation I’m going to leave well enough alone. But you know what they say, the only dumb question is the one never asked....

Maybe if you're riding a wavestorm or something.

You came to a good conclusion.....except for the part about the question...... ;) :o
