Ha ha good eyes beasho, I got that paddle from Stoney a few years ago!

You are so right Whatz^.... that board was only 29" wide, so less front foot movement over all. When running down the line, I tend to move both feet closer to the rail.

Just found your vid on YouTube. Fantastic views and explanation. I am new to riding my simsup and was noticing that I had to move side to side in order to move it around. I'm used to moving up and down the length of the board while longboarding and just can't surf without my feet doing something. I was experimenting myself just as you have done but was about a year behind the curve. Thanks for saving me some time. The visual was perfect for my learning style.

Simsups absolutely require moving your back foot. I don't know how anyone could turn one otherwise.

Clay....you da man!

i am still laughing from the move at 1:36, i have done this so many times i thought to patent it...trying to turn the board, then leaning on the paddle, then the board going one way while i go another, classic.

i was taught to plant feet on center line and using my body to turn, which only gets you so far. am going to try really moving both feet.

great vid, thanks

Clay, thank you for your videos! Very helpful. I began watching the embedded one and didn't notice how I ended up on YouTube watching one after another one on your channel. Please keep it up!

Another great vid, Clay.  They also always make me smile.

I can turn now, but for the life of me, I haven't the foggiest idea in my head about what I am doing, it is all just "feel".

Hammer is fun because it is such a 'slidey' board, I can attack a wave face head on and turn it back 180 degrees toward shore at the crest.  I haven't been able to actually catch a wave that way yet, if it's even possible.

That's news.  Tell WD to make some videos showing how his hammer turns.  Never really ever see what they apparently can do.

SUP Surfing Footwork, paddling out
« Reply #22 on: March 02, 2018, 01:52:24 PM »
My contribution for paddling out (in any condition):

I always paddle in a staggered, near-surf stance (feet close together).
This technique works best on narrower boards.
Mine range from 28" down to 24" wide.
I call it the "ditch digger" paddle.
Using my upper body, I lean heavily into every stroke.  I'm goofy foot, and 90% paddle on my left side.
So many times, I've seen people trying to paddle out and just don't put enough muscle into it.
Then when a wave comes, their feet are parallel, body is too upright and they fall off.
Stand up and do it all over again.

Personally, I'd put myself on the fringe of Sup-surfers (kinda crazy).
But this is what works for me.

Oh, also a short shaft and smaller blade makes for quicker strokes.
