Rip curl gps watch quick review
« on: December 29, 2014, 12:50:50 PM »
Hi

So had my first surf with the watch this morning, and I have done a couple of flat water paddles with it turned on to surf mode.

Here's my quick review.

1. The watch is big, but very light and comfortable.

2. Set was easy as just hit the button, it found where I was and time/date and tide all set up via the GPS

3. The app install on iOS was easy peasy.

4. On flat water it works sweet, records speed, distance and where you went. Not enough detail for full in training but fine for just keeping track of time on the water.

5. In the surf it picked up all but one wave this morning automatically. So pretty good algorithm.

6. Over all pretty cool. The website app is fun to see your surf session where you paddled and your waves.

7. The app gets surf conditions from magic seaweed .com and for some reason has my tides backwards (high when low)  but on the watch it's fine. (Might be a setting on the app)

My session this morning was in average surf and I only caught 5 waves in an hour (still struggling with the 8'3"

Over all I like the watch.

KiwiSupGreg I got one as well and have yet to paddle flat water or surf with it, it took some playing around but I finally got mine to the correct tide settings of my local break (2nd beach Newport RI), now if I could only get some waves as I am dying to test it out.

hey all, i know this is an old thread, but can't see a more recent one about the RipCurl watch. So thought I'd tag on to this one.

I love the GPS data you shared, can you advise which watch this was and whether or not the one on sale now is similar?
Kook from the Isle of Man. Mediocre at SUP, poor to average surfer, not bad on a motorcycle though...

Yeah so I really liked mine until today where it came unfastened somehow during a kite session and is now on the seafloor in the Atlantic somewhere.

So........word to the wise, make sure the hasp is really secure. I swore mine was but I was body dragging a bit through a wind shadow and looked down and it was gone. I think the excess strap got out of the fastener and that was it.

Really sucks. Looking at the new Nixon watch that is coming out later this year, or buying a Trace.

Any updates on the Ripcurl GPS Search?

My Trace is great but it doesn't give feedback on Speed or Waves . . .  until you download all the data when you get home.

Most recently I have embarked on Foil boarding and my Foil-Amigo was wearing this watch.  He was getting real-time insights on speed and distance that was pretty cool.  Then again this watch appears to be dated.  Is there any newer / better solution out there for GPS tracking, Wave Count and speed?
