Caught my first wave on an SUP!
« on: September 11, 2017, 08:59:06 AM »
Finally! And, i owe 60% of it to a guy named SuptheCreek... Had a great day surfing the Irma swell that filtered in on 9/9. It was like an end of the summer party with my friends and family. Good times.

Eventually, got on the SUP after squeezing every ounce of energy from my arms surfing. With some incredibly helpful tips, i finally caught a wave. Thank you SuptheCreek!!! Awesome day!

For clarification purposes, that is not me. I wish I was that poised and handsome.

Handsome for sure.... I got proof!!! (pic 3)

JrJr is the real deal!
Absolute ripper on shortboards and one hell of a boat Captain (obscured for security purposes in pic 3)

But my trusty "Kook Hat Cam" got shots of JrJr's very 1st SUP wave. (pics 1 & 2)

The bastard was ripping cutbacks on his FIRST ever SUP wave.
Hate these young punks getting into standup.... making us look bad.

That is the opposite of poised. One hand on the paddle!

I knew i was doing something wrong.

Thanks again to SuptheCreek for the pointers. That was the most fun i have ever had on a SUP.  Also, the most humbling surfing i have done in a while.

Found another one of JrJr.... using the paddle correctly in the 1st 10 minutes of SUP surfing!

and I'll add a pic of what the waves were truly like on this amazing day.

I am working on a vid to post.

Everyone who surfed before SUP surfing usually take a couple of tries to actually paddle into and catch a wave from a standing position. It will take the rest of your SUP surfing life to figure out what to do with the paddle. To really get a great perspective on SUP surfing, Paddle out about a 1/4 mile and up or down the coast. It's a whole different approach to accessing other breaks and just experiencing the ocean away from the surf line. ( and not in a power boat )

I hear ya. Just go paddle. I like that. That's all I've ever done until recently.

Up next, I'm going to buy a boogie board.

First time best time! Cool you tried sup. Obviously you're no Jr surfer! Good job and dreamy swell Irma delivered from such a long distance. That was one massive storm. Poor bastards down there.  :'(
One could go into a mall in Kansas and ask a teenager "What is a surfer looking for?, and the answer will always be, "The perfect wave"

Hi there,
Just wanted my stoke as well.

I did the same thing today - caught my first wave on a SUP! I'm still considering myself a beginner in both prone surfing and stand up paddling. I own 14 ft bark Expedition and usually cruising around the coast in Boston harbor.  As I'm getting more comfortable going farther away from shore I'm challenging myself every time. Today was pretty calm day and I was planning just to paddle for an hour or so. Soon I noticed consistently forming waves where I've never seen them before. I paddled there and here you go  - 3-5 ft peelers in open water. Later I realized that it was low tide and I've never been there at low tide. Anyway, I tried surf these waves and I succeed for few times!!! Still so stoked. I had a couple crazy "long" runs  (albeit - long for me) just a tad over 100 yards and I hit 15+ mph, accordingly to my Garmin Fenix.

Now I have to learn to turn this air carrier. And I def need to ass some traction pad in the tail section and might have to look into the different fin options. My board has an only center piece pad  - exactly as on my avatar.. But it's a different topic.

Yes.... you need traction back there!
