Standup Foil leash options
« on: August 27, 2017, 06:17:08 PM »
OK, so my leash is getting fouled on the foil more often than I think it should.  I'm using a rather long heavy duty leash because I don't want to be too close to the board in the wash.  Today I came up with the innovation to put a couple of coils of leash under my foot while in paddle-stance, then when I hop over to surf stance it lets the leash free. While it worked great, it is annoying and not sustainable.

So what's everyone doing to solve this?  short leash? waist leash? Something else?

When I use a waist leash with a long, heavy rope I coil the rope up and stuff it under the waist belt. Works great. You could also use a coiled leash and a waist belt--that's what I use on my downwind board and it's great. The leash stays out of the water and out from underfoot.

I just use a shortboard leash. A foot or so drags in the water but it's not long enough to wrap under the foil. My boards only 6'10" so not much longer than my shortboards.

a good length coil leash for sure, I hate it when I forget mine and have to use a straight, they always end up around something and also drag.

Is it possible to create a coiled leash from straight material?

Aka maybe wrapping some straight leash around a mandrel and then tempering with a heat gun.

It's how they're made. Not with a heat gun but a heated mandrel. I know you're careful, and you make leashes stronger than you can buy, but a lot of people would be happy just to see the coils and might not test the strength.

This is what I am using with the Waist Belt $20.00

Mo better , less wrapping around the mast..

For me for the 8'5 and smaller I like the 7'  $30.00
For 8'8" and taller guys the 8' $35.00

Also really liking it on my short sups 6'0" and 7'3"

Switched to a coiled leash for the first time today.  Granted the surf was much bigger then I have been in before with the foil, breaking waves and it was over a shallow sandbar.  Damn leash got tangled up at least 5 times.....nothing is perfect....:).

I hear you then again didn't you talk about Dave Kalama just melting his leash back together with a matchstick and paddling back out?

The last thing I want is to snap a leash but there are some extreme examples of things that work that are less than intuitive.  I would think the heat gun would be less impactful than scorched leash material but I should run a few tests.

They're kind of wimpy for the drag of a SUP and foil.
