FoilZilla - Sam Pa'e builds monster foil board- will it fly?
« on: August 25, 2017, 03:10:52 PM »
Sam Pa'e and Myron Vangieson built a huge Foil board to use this weekend at the Red Bull Party Wave event, check out the building process at facebook links.  What do you think, will it work?

Probably. It's sort of a pretty version of the geezer foil without the surface piercing stability.

What do you think, will it work?

I bet it does, if not, at least it will make a really nice picnic table; "pass me the pickles please"...

I'll bet some tuning on the tail will get an angle that flies. Either way, what a blast.

I gotta follow that event. Sounds like a ball.

They are taking it out tomorrow without a trial run and I'm planning to shoot some video.  Crossing fingers it works.
From my experience, the weight needs to be balanced over the front wind for level flight.  So it looks to me that I if the three riders are on the deck pad, the weight will be too far back for balanced flight and the wing will breach but hopefully they can get it to work.

Shit 3 people I thought it was just for one! Yes center of gravity looks way wrong but wish them the best of luck, on a large enuf bump it will left but most likely the will all be looking at the sky very quickly as the get ejected out back. A larger rear lifting wing would help I would think

Should be interesting finding and maintaining trim but if anyone is going to pull this off it's Sam.

Here is a little slide show and video I put together of the Party Wave event.  They caught plenty of waves with the foil board but could not keep the foil wing down, every time they picked up speed the nose would lift, the foil breached and bucked them off as you can see in the photos.  They did win the Duke's Fest Aloha Award for their efforts and skit:

Hard to see if it flew or not but there's plenty of planing area.
The hardest thing will be getting both foils in the same part of the wave to synch lift.
