Wishing some luck to Night Wing and other TX folks.

If I remember correctly, NW lives very near to where this hurricane is focused.  I cannot imagine my home and most of my possessions being that vulnerable....

Wow, best of luck, Nightwing. Casey and Jen Trout were at our house for dinner last Monday and they were telling us why they moved from Pensacola to Maui. Nightmare. Be safe.

Thanks everyone for your concerns. My wife and I, plus our cat Tucker, are prepared and we're going to ride Harvey out like we rode Ike out 9 years ago. We've never experienced a storm like Harvey which will hang around until next Wednesday. Just got back from the grocery store about 40 minutes ago and the grocery store is almost empty of non perishable food items.

Ike was more of a wind event whereas Harvey is going to be a rain event. On the news, Harvey is billed as a "soaker" with up to 30" (or more) of rainfall in some places. The latest rainfall predictions for this entire event near where I live is now up to 20" of rain and they said it could be even more over the next 5 days.

I've been watching the radar weather links (and I have tons of weather links). Right now, there are bands of rain over head of us, but it is not raining. The rain is evaporating before it hits the ground. This is called "virga" when this happens. Unfortunately, the drier air high up in the sky between the bands of rain and the ground will eventually get wetter and wetter and the rain will hit the ground. So far, it is a waiting game. But we'll be okay.

Two of my neighbors called me. One has a huge natural gas powered generator so he'll have lots of hot water for showers if we lose power for a few days, but I'm not expecting that to happen if we don't get any lightning storms. The other neighbor says he has an outside gasoline powered generator. He told us if the power goes out for a long time, to bring all of our over frozen food from our freezer (since my house is all electric) to put in his two big freezers since they will be powered by his gasoline generator.

I'm not really expecting any long power outages unless Murphy's Law bites us in the rear end. Time will tell.

NW, wishing you and all your neighbors weather the storm safely.

Wingman,

30" of rain  :(

That's a LOT of water coming at you from behind, while a Cat 3 surges from the Gulf. Fark.

Might want to get your hip boots ready :-\

I wish you Godspeed my friend!
Sometimes your home being safe isn't the problem.... it's the infrastructure damage in general, that may isolate you for longer than you think.
I simply don't trust in low lying areas during a storm like this.

We will all be thinking of you during and after the storm.

Just followed Nullschool's long range forecast of this storm

According to them, this is:
The storm that won't move.
SW winds will batter the exact same area for almost a week with only moderate reduction in speed, while probably raining non stop for the entire time.

IMO
I'd get the hell out of there now, if at all possible.

Hurricane Harvey is now a Cat-4 hurricane with sustained winds of 130 mph and it is still offshore from Rockport. And it now starting to rain at my house although it is light rain at the moment. No wind to speak of.........yet.

This storm got bigger than had been predicted. The original prediction was for Harvey to become a minimal Cat-1 hurricane with 75 mph winds.

Horrible "Harvey"....good luck, NW. Hurricanes are a double edged sword for us riders and home owners. Superstorm Sandy was no joke for us here in the Northeast. Sure hope Harvey chills out a bit for you guys.  8)
