Foil Spots Baja
« on: August 24, 2017, 06:34:56 PM »
I will be going to Cabo San Lucas in late September for about 4 days.  Unfortunately it is a work trip, so I will be limited on how much actually surf time there is to be had, but I am completely addicted to my foil and I want to take it with me everywhere I go!  Question is.....anyone have any idea what a good spot to foil down there would be?  Old Man's seems like a no brainer, except for the 1000's of people to hit with my guillotine.  I have attached a photo of the area where we will be staying (Marked with the yellow star).  The hotel is called Hacienda Encantada.  if there is a little roller in front of the hotel, that would be perfect....but probably will have to travel a bit.

Also, I will be in LA for two days before.  I am staying in Hermosa, and know the South Bay very well.  One day I will be down in South Orange County.  Anyone want to meet for a foil sesh?  LMK!

I would hit up Old Man's if I was going.  There is an inside and outside takeoff.  You can surf it all day long, so if you hit it around 2pm the crowd should be surfed out by then.  I was there during spring break which I am guessing was the busiest time and it was not that crowed, everyone got waves.  Not sure how skilled you are on the foil but you can always stay to the shoulder as well.

Yeah that seems like the ticket, and not too far from my hotel.  Thanks.  Hope to see some of you in OC  soon too.

Completely addicted to my foil.  Really?  I just don't get it.  Pretty lame if you ask me.  Can you surf a prone board or SUS?

Check it out the shoe is in the other foot!  Hahah!  So hilarious. Pretty sure that is what every prone only surfer in the world says about stand up. "Seems pretty lame, I don't get it".

What I don't get is not wanting to surf everything. When I see something that floats, First thing I think is, I bet I can surf that. Now I have something that flys instead of floats.

All good, don't worry about foiling Rider, I'm not trying to convert anyone except a few close friends. Speaking of which, Pono when do you get back?

November 5th. I'll be bringing my L41 that I converted to a foil board. I need to get Alex's new fat boy foil. Might as well get some new injuries. I'm going to swaddle myself like a skateboarder.

Here you go Pono. Beginner's foiling protective wear, with lots of float:)
It's not overhead to me!
8'8" L-41 ST and a whole pile of boards I rarely use.

I've surfed that area of the Baja since I was a young surf perro...
I am also foil surfing and IMO, Old Man's would not be at the top of my list of spots...too shallow and rocky...I've been more than "scratched" a few times...let alone crowds...clueless noobs on longboards...vocal Mexican locals at La Roca and Zippers...etc...

The area around where you are staying is extremely rocky...so, you are gonna have to drive...I'd look for a playa with a little more sand...;-)

Pics attached are from the highway overview above Old Man's, La Roca, Middles...Zippers...etc...the site of a few grizzly cartel murders, lately...buena suerte and vaya con dios...

I am thinking Launipoko might be a good spot to foil.  Plenty of water.  Right?

Interesting day.  Paddled out too thousand peaks with my wife on our longboards. Randy was out with his new Dave K design SUP and Key L and a few friends paddled there short board foil into the line up and it was so magical to watch.
They were riding the waves thru the reef then pumping out back to the line up.  incredidle to watch.
Stand up foiling does not interest  me but short board foiling gets me totally stoked.

i am in my my late sixtys and still ride 6'0 shortboard.

Of course you can foil Lpoko but most of the folks go to guard rails so they dont interfere with the local culture.

I would too if my back and neck could hack it, but one day on the longboard = 3 nights sleeping sitting up.
