Knik River, Alaska
« on: August 22, 2017, 04:21:38 PM »
My daughter's friend has a drone, he offered to take some video. I've been wanting to try this short run from Eklutna Tailrace (I visited it last December https://www.standupzone.com/forum/index.php/topic,31342.msg345553.html#msg345553 - if photobucket will let you look...) to Knik River Bridge, where the highway crosses this silty, cold water. BTW -- I have seen Beluga Whales under this bridge once - I was sort of hoping they would show up for me paddling...long shot...

SO I put in up near the Tailrace, where Eklutna Lake pours thru a 6 foot tunnel thru the mountain, driving a power plant.

The Drone shot taken at the end shows where I started - right at the bend in the river with white buildings nearby.

It's REALLY shallow in spots - this is a river full of glacier flour. What looks like a ripple from the water is a sandbar clearly visible overhead. Folding fin a good idea.

Goal in sight - first a railroad, then highway crossing.

The drone started to lose contact here and flew home after these shots

The water does weird stuff to the fin, pulls you all around. I found that a fast pace minimized this. The red inflatable kayak had a older couple who came over to ask me how I did - the whirls were spinning them 180/360 sometimes - but I was going a lot faster.

Hope you enjoyed the trip - I loved this one.

Thanks Sup, TallDude, Night Wing :D

My daughter promises an edited video later too - should be cool! The drone ( I think a Dj mavic? Folds up to the size of a set of binoculars in it's case) takes really clear video - those are just screen captures and I had to size them down a lot.

My daughter hasn't come through with that video yet - so I gave it a shot. Default music option, and a mix of my "kook-cam" GoPro and my Sony RX100II on the board (pretty amazing stablization I think) to mix in with the drone video.

I tried to be brutal and keep it short - it's still over 2 minutes. Just a link to vimeo - not sure if it will embed...

I think I should redo it with more drone, less gopro/sony because the drone stuff is so pretty...but I'm also trying to make it tell a story....

That's nice having three cameras to work with, especially that one's a drone:) You did pretty good with your own edit.
