What is it?
« on: August 22, 2017, 09:50:40 AM »
I found this pic quite awhile ago, and have been trying to figure out what it is, even though that front end looks so familiar, it had me stumped.  Then a new documentary was shown last week, "The cars that made America" on the History channel, it was awesome, watch all three parts, and with the help of that, I was finally able to figure out what this was.  It was originally designed by an eccentric, famous car designer, and helped save a brand, but they didn't make very many of this particular style.
It takes a quiver to do that.

The rusting frame's front end reminds me of an old Cadillac.

ragtop Galaxy?
They made tons of Galaxies but not many convertables? Haven't seen many if nothing else. Know nothing about designers tho I can relate to eccentric.

Yep that looks like a Pontiac grill and the cool 'wide stance' styling they did in the late fifties, early sixties. A Catalina?

A Catalina.
This was my first car. Did a couple of surf trip to Mexico in this beast. It looked exactly like this when we traded it in for my first Ford Truck.

It's not overhead to me!
8'8" L-41 ST and a whole pile of boards I rarely use.

STC was super close, and then things became closer, iopsailor being almost dead on.

It's a (still a question on the year) 1964-5-6?  GTO station wagon under the name of a "Catalina", original designed by John DeLorean (the sedan version), which was known as America's first muscle car.  The first GTO (Grand Turismo Omologato) came out in 1964, but I've seen pics with that same front grill design on the Catalinas from the years I listed, so some are wrong, but I don't know which ones.  The Catalina came out before the GTOs but this was the first Catalina that was made from the GTO platform.  Whichever, this car needs some work.

This is supposedly a 1964 GTO Catalina, but I've also seen this car listed as a '66.  But thanks for playing as well as input to my mystery.
Maybe the resident wench (PB) can pin down the year.
It takes a quiver to do that.

Wow....that was fast...4 more posts while I was typing..... :) I'm pretty sure my dad's was a Catalina too. Bill?...you'll remember better than I do. He used to get a lot of interesting Pontiacs. I can dimly remember a 50's safari wagon (woody) too.

My 1st car was a 69 Pontiac Bonneville loaded with everything they offered...power windows, seats, trunk, AC, 8 track stereo, you could seat 8 comfortably and with the electric seats fully reclined...sleep two.... ;)

I did indeed know it was a Pontiac station wagon (obvious Pontiac nose, and station wagon rear pillar) but other than that, no clue. I wouldn't have guessed GTO.

Catalina was a commonly used sub brand for Pontiac, it generally meant the entry level Pontiacs. My dad had one in kind of an awful lime green metallic shade.

I don't know that much about American cars or body styles, I'm more of a drivetrain and suspension guy. and European rather than American.

Bob--Dad's Catalina was a Hardtop--a sedan with no center pillar. The Pontiac Wagon he had was an earlier year, like maybe a 54.

LOL...that's the one I described above only it was a Bonneville not a Catalina. 455 under the hood...used to smoke some "muscle cars" that friends had.

He had another wagon for a short while just before I got my license...only had it for a few months and traded it for the lime green Bonneville. Wish i still had that Bonneville...only 200 made like that one.

My memory sucks, but I think the Bonneville came later. And if I remember right it was blue.

He had a blue Bonneville as well but I know the Green one was a Bonneville...I drove it for 2 years. I got my license in that car.

Ask your sister...Carol has forgotten more than we know about GM cars.
