a river may not be the easiest place to try

I'll try it on a lake first.

SOOOOOOOOO!

I've come a long way from my first paddle and for some CRAZY reason gettin' an itch to get a Red Paddle now. Specifically the Voyager 13'2"!!

Sigh, why didn't anybody warn me on the itches and addictions to come? It may very well be due to some antibiotics needed. LOL!

I almost forgot to mention the issues with my Hala have, for the most part, gone away. On my last paddle two weeks ago I was lounging around eating a snack and looked back to see it virtually gone. I was surprised to see that. I know, a few of you said that it would.

Needless to say, I have an important phone call to make to Peter(owner and founder of Hala.)

I'm trying to find comparisons between the Red Paddle 13'2", the RP 12'6" and the Hala Carbon Hoss. So far what I've seen is that the Red Paddles have lower weight capacities than the Halas.

Between the 13'2" and the 12'6" , it seems that the 12'6" has better tracking. Not sure why though. Haven't been on either yet. I vaguely remember trying a Red Paddle last year and I THINK it was the 14'2".

The rated max capacity of the Reds are 20lbs down on the Hala Carbon Hoss but the Reds are still rated to 330lbs.

Between the 13'2" and 12'6", the 13'2" will have better tracking/glide. It is longer and narrower. SUPboarder did a nice comparison video here: https://greenwatersports.com/11196/detailed-video-review-of-the-2018-red-paddle-co-voyager-boards

Our reviews are here:

https://greenwatersports.com/11689/review-of-the-2018-red-paddle-co-13-2-voyager-plus-inflatable-paddle-board
https://greenwatersports.com/11171/review-of-the-2018-red-paddle-co-12-6-voyager-inflatable-paddle-board

We haven't tried the Hala but at 11' x 34" both Voyagers are going to track and glide better.

Hi Windwarrior,

Sorry in that I can’t provide you with any comparisons, but I have the Red Explorer 13’2” x 30” and for an inflatable touring board, I really like it. It's just a comfortable board to paddle. It is stable, has a comfortable deck pad, is fairly stiff for an inflatable.  I can try and answer any questions you might have on that specific board, but again, can’t help you with any comparisons.

Should also mention that I agree with Julian. I can’t see how the 12’ 6” Red is going to track better than the 13’ 2”. Just doesn’t make sense.
ONE SUP Evo 12’ 6” x 24”
Infinity Whiplash 12' 6" x 24 1/2"

Red Paddle Explorer (Inflatable) 13' 2" x 30

I meant to say quick course corrections for a cross bow turn, not directions, and like PB said, it's likely the most important stroke to use on the river for turning.

I was thinking about this thread this spring - backpaddle really doesnt' work - I'm full of it. Kayak  technique.

Cross-bow - not easy on longer boards - but I see it. I have start just sticking my paddle in and adjusting the angle - it turns forward momentum into side-ways motion - you can knock yourself off the board if you are moving at 3 or 4 mph. I find I have pretty good control now, and it's a good option on a 10 foot wide "lazy river".

Video from the spring - not great but you can at least see what I mean.

https://photos.app.goo.gl/X1S7gEuQJZtk3bnP8

Boards - I have a not so stable Red Elite at 14', and a more stable 12'6" Blue Planet - I have improved my technique and like the stability of the Blue Planet so much that I have used it the last 6 or 7 times. What speed do you want to go? I can easy do 3.5 mph - and I can do 4 miles at up to 4.2mph . But when I am puttering around in the creeks and having a nice time it's almost always 3 mph (this is the 12'6" BP)  . I'm super heavyweight you will likely do better. Keep in mind that there is more drag from wetted surface to think about too. The 13 footer might take more energy to go 3.5 mph than the 12 footer? This is where Pono will have better advice maybe....

Hey Quickbeam,

Thanks for chiming in.

I'm wondering if you have loaded that thing up with gear and if so, how did it do with tracking etc? Especially in windy conditions. Fell free to chime in on the other thread I started.
