Glen Campbell
« on: August 09, 2017, 03:21:06 PM »
RIP, as we all know he died from that thief of a disease Alzheimer’s which steals your brain before you're done with it.  The last two days have been filled with "Rhinestone Cowboy", okay, and "Wichita Lineman", same thing, good but not great IMO.  So I'm going to offer what I think is his greatest recording (I didn't say song because he didn't write it, John Hartford did), which shows off his voice as well as his picking.

It takes a quiver to do that.

A lot of Campbell's songs seem kind of hoaky today, but he was a great guitarist and a good singer.  Not a lot of people know he was a high demand studio musician in LA, and played guitar or bass on many hits from the Byrds, Elvis Presely, Beach Boys and others.   My sister won an album of his at a carnival and I used to play it by the hour  and try to figure out how he picked lead on lots of real fast country licks,, one of the best country / pop guitarists of the 60s and 70s.

Phil Spector's 'Wrecking Crew'.

When I heard "Wichita Lineman", it reminds me of riding around in my parents Plymouth station wagon listening to the AM radio.

I never knew that about him, either.  I did know about the Wrecking Crew from reading about Carol Kaye, and how the same group of studio musicians were the ones performing on all kinds of albums, soundtracks, etc.  Finding out that Glen Campbell was one of them makes me appreciate him a lot more.  I just thought of him as the guy on TV.  Carol Kaye talks about the Wrecking Crew (name wasn't official) here (the others didn't become household names like Glen Campbell did):

must watch Netflix

The Wrecking Crew! (2008)
A celebration of the musical work of a group of session musicians known as "The Wrecking Crew", a band that provided back-up instrumentals to such legendary recording artists as Frank Sinatra, The Beach Boys and Bing Crosby.

I've posted this before a few years ago, but it's of another 'behind the scenes' studio group was known to few as 'the Swampers'. These guys were from the south. It didn't include Glen Campbell, but I bet he hung with them at some point. Definitely worth a watch. Probably on NetFix .
This is the trailer.

This is nothing to do with Glen Campbell, but rather about yet another “behind the scenes” musical group called the Funk Brothers. The movie about their story is called “Standing In The Shadows Of Motown”. Is a great movie.

The Funk Brothers played on more number one hits than the Beach Boys, Rolling Stones, Elvis Presley and the Beatles combined.

And if you remember “What Becomes Of The Broken Hearted” by Jimmy Ruffin, in the movie Joan Osborne does it and knocks it out of the park. The movie has lots of other great music as well. Really is worth watching.

These guys had a pretty good night with him looks like.

He plays at the end and you can see that until the disease completely took him he still had it. He could sing when it had long robbed him of his everyday faculties. That's a testament to the artist right there.
