GoPro Injury...
« on: August 07, 2017, 09:31:22 AM »
My story I thought was worth sharing for those that have gopros...

I was out surfing, lost my balance paddling over a wave and fell forward on the board, my hand hit the gopro mount (gopro not on board) and the mount sliced right through my hand. It was a deep cut, deep enough that I could see the fat in my hand. I had to go to the ER to get many stitches, it was not fun. Needless to say, I took the mount off but figured I would warn others that its definitely just another thing to get injured on out there. This was a freak accident but it does happen. I have been surfing almost 20 yrs and never had or seen a cut like this. I am 4 weeks out from my injury and healed for the most part although the scar is very sensitive and hurts. I have yet to surf again but plan to get back in the water later this week and I have to wear a glove surfing for at least 4 weeks until the skin is stronger (so says my dr.).

Long double cut. Great suture job. And it healed well with no complications.

If the scare still hurts and is sensitive after 4 weeks, even with a glove covering your hand, the scar is still weak tissue (in my opinion). Grip your paddle too hard and/or push against the water with the paddle blade and the scar may split open. If it does split open, you'll most likely have to get re-stitched putting you back to where you were 4 weeks ago.

If it was me with your healed scar, I'd give it another 2 weeks to heal (6 weeks in total) some more to toughen up the scar. As the old adage goes, "Better to be safe than sorry".

Good post and heads up.. I'm surprised it doesn't happen more often..

I never leave them on but if I did I think I'd be covering it with a few layers of duct tape..

I'd use fcs plug mounts on your board to avoid that in the future. They work better too. I have one on my board.

It's not overhead to me!
8'8" L-41 ST and a whole pile of boards I rarely use.

thanks baldbull and hope you feel better soon.
I got one of those gopro surf mounts but haven't installed it yet and still setting in my draws as I'm happy with helmet & head strap mounts. After this story I might think about on what to do?

Ouch man. Let us know if you want advice on putting in an FCS but honestly that's a one in a million.

I nearly broke my thumb years ago hitting the board with the paddle, just wrong place, wrong time. Sorry you got bit man.

It happens. I broke my hand when I was first learning to downwind. I pearled on a big drop and punched my GoPro with the back of my hand as I was being shot off the front of my board. That was the old GoPro with the plastic case. The new little one is quite a bit safer with the cushy orange floaty covering it.

World's worst GoPro injury EVER!
One could go into a mall in Kansas and ask a teenager "What is a surfer looking for?, and the answer will always be, "The perfect wave"

Probably not. Some poor schmuck has probably selfied themselves backward into a beer truck or off a cliff by now.
