Used Starboard Allstar
« on: July 25, 2017, 08:43:47 AM »
So I have a friend who's looking to get into a displacement hull board (I let him ride mine last weekend, and as we're paddling he said "This could be an expensive day.")  ;D

I found a used 12'6" X 27.5" Allstar at our local paddle shop that looks like a good deal.

The shop owner said he thinks it's "A few years old". In doing some quick googling I've seen some people saying that the 2014 is preferable over a 2015, but couldn't find the reasons why. What are the differences, and how can I identify the model year?

What would be a good price for a few year old Allstar?

The shop was closing, (he was actually locked up and in his truck when I pulled in, but took me inside) so I wasn't able to pull it down and look closely, but it appears to be in good shape.

FYI, he lives in an upstairs beach apartment with very limited access, could probably get the 12'6" in there, but a 14' ain't happening.

Thanks in advance.

I'm confused. The All Star isn't really a displacement nose board. Do you mean a race or touring board (as contrasted with a surf-shape all-round board)?

If I were you I wouldn't get into buying boards for other people. Let your friend demo the board and decide for himself how much he wants it. Check the All Star carefully for leaks around the scupper holes.

You're right, for ease of conversation I do just sorta lump everything into one category or the other, planing vs. displacement.

So if not a displacement hull, what is it?

Not buying anything for anybody, just helping look for possible deals and doing research. I happened to be going by the shop so I stopped in to look. The decision will be his alone.

A. The board on top is not an Allstar.

But, I'd call the Allstar a 'taint. As in, 'taint a displacement or a planing hull. Saying a board is a displacement hull is generally as wrong as calling it a planing hull, except that we sort of all know what you mean by that. You mean the nose isn't wide and flat. No, it's not, but when you flip the board over you see that it's generally flattish, and obviously designed to ride mostly on top of the water, and to gain lift when it's pushed faster. At the risk of starting another battle, none of these boards really plane unless they're in a wave, and the only displacement boards I've ever seen were the original M&M boards and Speedboard (and the Speedboard is only half displacement). This is what a displacement hull looks like. None of our boards look like this:

The misconception comes from pictures like this, which are just monumentally silly. Not even close enough to be called wrong. Just dumb.

Thank you GlideMarko.

So, now that we've established that I used the wrong term, and since we all sort of know what I mean by that, does anyone have any opinions or answers relating to any of the questions I asked? ::)

2014 - http://www.star-board-sup-archive.com/2014/products/boards/shape_overview/race
2014 - http://www.star-board-sup-archive.com/2014/catalog/2014_starboard_sup_catalog.php

quick look - 2015s have much more standing area covered w/ deck pad

price... to many variables where u live (how many used board available), quality of a board, also different construction of a board 2015s were in 2 constructions-carbon sandwich(lighter)  and glass carbon, but it should be pretty cheap anyway for few years old board - in Europe, 600 eur.

I wilt now refer to that part of mine board as the "high leverage area".

I've had both the 2014 and the 2015 models. Avoid the 2014 as they were too fragile and with poor construction. The 2015 I thought was a good, do anything kind of board. Haggle hard and you'll lose little when it comes to resale as these always sell secondhand well.

Thanks guys, that's good information...

I'll have to check with my buddy, I'm not sure he's ready for "Ultimum Bouyancy".  :o

What is that, like Ultimate + Maximum?

Ultimum is a legit adjective--in Latin.
Foote 10'4X34", SIC 17.5 V1 hollow and an EPS one in Hood River. Foote 9'0" x 31", L41 8'8", 18' Speedboard, etc. etc.

Negotiating wise, blue and green (tiki) colorway is the less expensive glass carbon hybrid construction. Blue and orange (tiki) is the lighter and more expensive carbon construction. I mention in case the shop asks a carbon price.
