Reshaping rails on a 12'6
« on: July 22, 2017, 05:07:06 PM »
My 12'6 NSP cocomat is getting old, some small cracks on rails, and, at 28 1/4" width, it feels slow and someway boring. I will buy a new board soon or later but before that I'm thinking of cutting 3" on rails of my NSP to make it narrower and faster(?).
I know some guys did it, but is it worth it?
I can repair dings, I did rhinoplasty on my windsurfing board but making new rails looks like a big job. Before it's too late I should seek advices.
Should I cut or not?

Not worth it IMO and not a good idea..

You would kill any resale value that it has..

Yup, that's a perfect board for someone else, just the way it is.

by the time you stip the deck pad and grind back to over lap the rails you may as well be building a new board. Fare cheaper to sell and buy a narrower board

You should definitely not do this. Apart from the hassle and cost, you will change the volume of the board. Designs work best at certain volumes because it affects the waterline for a given load. You may actually end up with a slower board, not a faster one. Maybe faster, maybe not: definitely a waste of time and effort. Time to buy another board.

New board : 5
Saw job: 0

It's clear, I won't do it.
Thanks for your help! It just took few hours to receive advices from experienced people from all around the world! And you gave great arguments (for the next person who might think of doing it) :
- it would kill resale value
- better to sell and buy
- waste of time and money
- length matter
- thinner doesn't always mean faster
- easier or better to build a. new one

These morning I was on my way to do it, it's difficult to find a 14' in Japan, but you convinced me. Thank you

It sounds like something I would do, which means--don't do it.
Foote 10'4X34", SIC 17.5 V1 hollow and an EPS one in Hood River. Foote 9'0" x 31", L41 8'8", 18' Speedboard, etc. etc.
