Maliko summer pic
« on: July 14, 2017, 01:53:39 AM »
Was gonna post on my several year long topic The Smokin' Maliko report but it had been since February since anyone had posted on it so the Zone prompted me to start a new topic.

Back in February we were all wowed by some heavy weight conditions and they were.  But now it's summer and you can go anywhere you want and not get creamed.
I've been learning how to surfski but still go on my Bullet.  My original intent being go on the SUP when it's smokin and ski when it's lighter.  Well somehow it's been just the opposite.  Here I am on a really light day, on a very close line.  But I love the background of the shot.  And also here's today's Jeremy Riggs shot of Dave Kissane, a regular visitor from down under who is a top tier paddler and competes in the inter island races.

So in the summer you can get this kind of range.  My pic was from last week and Dave's was from today.

Nice pics. That really shows the contrast between conditions. I was lucky enough to go yesterday on the 2:30 shuttle. Intended to take my board but wound up in my OC1. Probably the ragged edge of crazy in the one-man. The wind swell was bigger than expected and there were unreal drops. Wind was full on cranking. Probably consistent very high 20's. I had a blast but was kicking myself for not taking my board.

Dave K (from the picture above) has been on the shuttle every day. He is a really fast paddler and you can see his skill level in the photo. Also, yesterday, Armie Armstrong from NZ was on the shuttle with his foil. I never saw him until just outside the harbor when I caught up to him and Ralf. Ralf said he just smoked the run on the foil board. Wish I'd seen him up and riding. When I passed him he was having to paddle the thing as the wind was very easterly so you had to paddle perpendicular to it at the finish, not optimal for speed.

Dave is on an SIC board??? That looks like my V1. Hey... Wait a minute...

Oh, Dave Kissane, I thought you meant Dave Kalama. That STILL looks like my board.

Foote 10'4X34", SIC 17.5 V1 hollow and an EPS one in Hood River. Foote 9'0" x 31", L41 8'8", 18' Speedboard, etc. etc.

Understandable mistake.  Both last names begin with K.  Yellow boards are like the last name Smith or like white boards.

By the way, I had a chance to ask Armie about foiling yesterday. He told me that he could have gotten the foil to pop all the way into the harbor if he'd been willing to paddle hard enough. I presumed he wasn't up because of the wind direction at the end but he said that the foil screams, even across the wind. He was on the foil yesterday also and it was a lot lighter, weak actually. But, he did really well. Every time he rides it, he gets better.
