Happy 4th! I went a little Baty
« on: July 04, 2017, 05:09:24 PM »
Making a 7'10"x 29" x 4.10" x 117L Bat Tail, and doing a couple diamond Swallow Tails too. 7'6" and 8'3" Quiver
I'm gonna do my 1st Epoxy glass job. Making 3 boards for myself, so I'll have only myself to blame if I mess them up! Wish me luck :)

Yeah man! Sweet tail.

Good luck, but I'm sure you'll do fine. Here's a tip. Do the one you want to be the best last. After 2 boards you'll have your biggest mistakes out of the way. Just take it easy and think it all through and you'll be fine.

Nice work in the shaping bay Fanman, they look clean!

A few nice things about epoxy.... it doesn't smell as much and cleans up easier.
Have fun with them.... I hope to meet up someday for a session, hopefully you'll be riding these!

Epoxy also brings new caution to the glasser, sander..... so suit up and protect yourself.
I just read this very interesting article about Josh Dowling's health issues after a long career working with epoxy.

Never too early to start off smart!

Those look really nice.  Will you be doing any pre-glass color, i.e. painting blanks with acrylics, or just going white?  Looking forward to updates.

Thanks for the input guys. Yes gonna be fun and lots of work, sanding etc. I sealed a couple of the blanks last night and they looks reall good this morning. Not to much to knock off. I was thinking of doing some color. I bought some tint was thinking of doing a swirl on the blank pre glassing. What Acrilic paint is best? Better to spray or brush on etc. in the old days my brother and I would just spay can color on and gloss over. Mostly stripes and sections. Buttons, Mark Foo and Ben Ipa inspired 70's etc.
Aloha

What are you using to seal, DAP FNF?  I was thinking about trying Z-Seal from Graphite Masters on my Bean Bag.  Any experience with that?

I used ZSeal from Shapers Supply Costa Mesa. It was a little thick so I thinned it out as directed until it was like whip cream. Good stuff!
Best of luck!

Sweet shapes! Love the thinned out rails and tails. Hand shaped? That's really nice work! Like everyone, I'm excited to see updates.

I've just used Hobby Lobby and Walmart acrylic paints for painting on foam. I throw in a little acrylic binder (acrylic floor polish or acrylic tile sealer) to thin and help adhesion, but I'm not sure it's necessary. Never had any delam problems, however. The bunch on Swaylocks prefer Nova Craft as the best acrylic paints.

Best to you! Keep the updates coming!

Yeah, like BG I use acrylic hobby paints thinned with water, if at all.

Haven't had delams either. Note that color in the resin on epoxy can be tough, so experiment at your own risk. A foam stain or paint is definitely safer to start with.

Thanks for the feedback on Z-Seal.  Definitely going to try it now.  Your build thread couldn't have come at a better time :-)

very nice work FanMan.

I have to get out east and ride one of these.  My favorite board (RIP) dimensions and tail were almost exactly like that albeit a handful more Liters and a few inches longer.

looking forward to the progress!

Nice work FanMan, I went double batty on my new board, threw in double concaves and some channels as well.
