Mounting my Takuma foil
« on: July 04, 2017, 01:31:56 PM »
I know it's been discussed, but I'm still confused.
How do I determine the foil placement?
Mast below rear foot? Is that while riding or paddling?
Help! Once placed I have about 4-5" of adjustment.
Takuma foil arrived on Maui yesterday and I'm totally ready to get it wet.
Board is a 9'0" Naish Mana that I have ridden waves with for years.
The Pacific is about 200 feet away!

Takuma should answer this.

Not all foils ride with the rear foot in the same spot.  It can be anywhere from over the mast to behind the mast.

Then you've got the stab angle factor. Adjustments to it can affect rear foot placement.

Thanks Guys.
Sent questions to Takuma. No response yet (less than 24 hours). I'm hopeful they will answer.

And yes, it is a 24 inch mast.

This is the exact question that everyone wants to know... :o.  Your best bet would obviously be Takuma but they will most likely give you a range.  I think there are guidelines but no exact answers.

I believe it has to do with several variables that will change with every application.

- Rider - skill (coordination), weight, (??)
- Board - Length, weight, shape or design, (??)

Go Foil suggests for a board 7'5" to 8'6" the opening of the Tuttle box should be 18" to 22" from the tail of the board.  One foot of difference in board length and 4" inches of different in placement for the box??? Things like,  "Who, what, when why?" start creeping up in your mind.

At least you will have 4" to 5" inches of adjustment provided your board is flat where the track placement or you can shim the foil mast or fuselage for the correct angle of attack.

Make sure to ask Takuma how the foil should be oriented ( angle of attack ) when paddle the board or catching a wave.  Too much and it drags in the water ( making it harder to catch waves and paddle out or around ). Too little and it wants to lift before you are ready ( in your surf stance ).  Post up what they say, I am sure others will want to know.

The Takuma is defiantly a beautiful foil, they have the nicest paint job.  Unfortunately it's a heavy some-bitch at 20+ lbs. For reference that is twice the weight of the Go-Foil ( Kai ) at around 9.5 (+/-) lbs.  I have no idea why they made the front wing so heavy.  It feels like it's made out of concrete.  I believe this is one of the reasons why the aluminum mast is prone to bending.  Everything I have heard about it, say it's the most stable and lifts at the lowest speeds.

What method are you using to mounting this to your Naish?
L41 SIMSUP S4 - 7'4" x 30 1/4" x 4 1/2" 112L
L41 SIMSUP S5 - 7'6" x 27 1/2" x 4 3/16" 106L
L41 SIMSUP S4 - 7'8" x 31"x 4 1/2" 122L - Modded w/ a King's TUT Tuttle box and using a King's foil.
L41 SIMSUP S4 - 7'10" x 30 1/4" x 4 1/2" 120L
Starboard Whopper - 10' x 34" x 4 1/3" 171L - w/ FCS GL-1 fins

Newps, thanks great questions for Takuma. Hope they get back to me soon.

Your weight comment surprised me. Not sure where your data came from. I just shipped the foil from mainland US to Maui and packaged, they charged me for 18lbs.
So I just weighed in on the bathroom scale 11.6 lbs. Questionable I know but with the postal scale weight it looks about right.
Less than 12 lbs not so bad.

I'm no fanboy (haven't even gotten it wet).

I am using Houston Kiteboarding Foilmount. Plenty of flat section for the mount.Board has some rocker but it is all up front.

Sweet, that is awesome!  Maybe they updated the design and cut some weight?  That was what the one my buddy had at his shop weighed.  We weighed it all together and each part separately.  This was on a legit digital mailing scale too.

I would try and go this route to confirm.  Weigh yourself, then weigh yourself holding the foil.

Post up a picture of the mount system and where you want to mount it on your board if you get a chance.  Love to see it.
