Quad fin question
« on: July 03, 2017, 02:07:17 PM »
Running quad setup, should the trailers be foil/foil? I have two Stretch short boards and both run quad with foil/foil trailers. My SUP's came with foil/flat, what's correct?
I tend to think Stretch has more experience and knowledge then most, but not all SUP shapers like Bert Burger/Sunova, his came with foil/flat ???

Thanks, Quad confusion

Typically, trailers foil/foil and outer foil/flat.
It's not overhead to me!
8'8" L-41 ST and a whole pile of boards I rarely use.

Blue Planet has a nice write up on skegs that might help:

The correct one is the one that feels best to you. They both work well.

Flat-sided fronts and double-foiled rears for me!  And you're right - Stretch put the modern quad config on the map.

Isn't there a legend in fin design on this forum who strongly makes a case for how wrong symmetric rear fins are.....

Hint...Larry

Yeah, they both work, but....

Test em yourself

I don't know who he is but would very much like to hear what he has to say.   8)

Testing fins isn't easy for me. I'm not yet at a level where I can tell the difference between real performance and imaginary performance, so I've been reading as much as I can and going with what seems best.

I've been really liking the Kinetic Racing quad sets I have on both my boards. They both have 50/50 rears.

I'm 6'4" 235' Flow 9'6"

Reading the MSeaweed link my Flow has a pretty wides tail, and the trailers are set wide too. So a foil/flat trailer isn't a bad thing, my Stretch boards aren't wide and trailers are much closer to c/l so makes sense they are foil/foil.

I like the way the thruster setup paddles (Straighter and more stable), but in average waves the quad just flys, can pump down the line and whip turns easier. I'm playing with fin sizes now, I've learned from kitesurfin you can deff over fin with quads especially the trailers so I'm starting off small.

will most likely go with the thruster in bigger waves, maybe not if super clean but that's only in my dreams!

I'm not sure if these are foiled or flat. I can't tell the difference. They come in regular or large size and work great in small to large surf. Longboard shape works fine though wave range with regulars for me at 95 kegs. Large I use on a gun.

Badger, kudos for admitting that you can't tell yet. I took a long time and a lot of waves before I could work out the differences as well. Here's how I progressed a bit.

For the meantime, get anything and ride them for a bit, then, on a typical day at your spot, change the fins and see if you notice. If you don't then don't worry and keep riding whatever. It's funny but true. But remember to change every now and again. You won't hobble yourself ( a common fear) by messing around if you stay with proven setups.

Also, buy a few cheap fins of drastically different types and sizes or watch craigslist and eBay for sets and collect used fins. They are cheap. Swapping around drastically will help you learn your own vernacular. I rode my quad 9'0" as a twin on small days for a few sessions to feel extreme sliding for instance.

Final tip, hide a bag of fins and a key on the beach so you can go in and out and swap around fast. Makes for a fun day of unexpected results lol.

Hope this helps but really, until you know, just ride and learn to pay attention to your board's feel.

Good tips Cowboy. I really should make an effort to try more fins.

Here's what I'm running now. I like these a lot better than the stock Sunova fins which I felt were too big.

JP's on the 8'10.

And X4's on the 8'4.

Depends on the board and your wave...
