Long Hudson Paddle — July 22
« on: July 01, 2017, 07:29:38 AM »
I'm planning a day expedition on the Hudson. The idea is to paddle from Poughkeepsie to Peekskill, which is about 32 miles. It's a long day, but the tides will be with us during the second half of the journey. We won't have any escorts, but there's no reason why we should ever be more than about a hundred feet from shore. There will probably be some kayakers with us too. This is definitely not a race.

The date is July 22, 7AM. This is a great paddle, especially the second half where we'll go through the Highlands region. I'm pretty excited about this! You'd have to bring some sort of cruising board as we'll have to keep a good pace to get to Peekskill before dark. There are spots to stop along the river, and we'll have some sort of lunch break at either Beacon or Cold Spring, depending on the time. Bring snacks, water, lunch, and some sort of water shoe.

It would be cool to have some Zoners join us. This isn't an official thing — it's just me wanting to do some distance with friends. (This is also a great training paddle for the Cape Cod Bay Challenge.) Let me know if you're interested!

Yes! Let's do that. Sometime after SEA Padle NYC. (Aug 5)
I think we might be able to drag-out off-shore if there is enough wind,
I think he'll be around.

Looks like good conditions for our run tomorrow. It's going to be hot and with a 5 mph crosswind developing in the afternoon. Five of us will be starting out from Poughkeepsie and a sixth will be joining half way. 32 miles on the Hudson!

Wish us luck, peeps!

The paddle was a complete success! We did 33 miles from Poughkeepsie to Peekskill. There were three kayakers and two SUPers, with a third SUPer who joined us for part of the way. We left at about 7:40 AM and finished almost exactly twelve hours later.

One of the things I learned with a point-to-point paddle is that the logistics matter a lot! You have to make sure every gets to the start and there are enough cars for the craft at the end. I ended up shlepping two SUPs and a kayak on my CRV, and my wife helped bring people back to the beginning. It was an hour each way, so that wasn't a small deal.

The weather behaved itself. The only contrary winds were minor. It was hot but mostly hazy, so we weren't baking out there. Mostly it was paddling mile after mile. Great paddling conditions. We had the tide with us too during most of the ride also.

I loaned my 12'6" Amundsen to a woman named Lori, and she was a beast! Wow. She kept me on my game even though I was on a 14' board. One of the kayakers was a little slow, and we had to stop for her a lot. That was fine. It just meant a water break every twenty minutes or so. She had a great attitude, and she made it. On the ride back, this woman amazed us with stories of her Harley! Another kayaker was an IBMer, and he had the gadgets. We tracked our speed and distance the whole way. Our final speed was sow, about 3.3 mph, but hell, we made it!

I definitely want to do this again. Maybe make this a yearly event? In retrospect I would start a little earlier. I would also wear a long sleeve rash guard. That's about it.

CCBC, eat your heart out!

Looks like an awesome day trip!

2 hours schlepping doesn't seem like to much of a sacrifice for an all day adventure,
maybe for an hour downwinder.

Nice, I would love to join you folks one of these years. I've ridden that area on a motorcycle, and it's beautiful. Thanks for the pics.

Since I'm usually out by myself, I rarely get pictures of me paddling. I like that one of me by the cliff.

nice.

12 hrs on your board is still 12 hrs on the board. Whatever speed you go at. It's a long outing.

Can you/do you take dips in the river?

Why longsleeve? Sun isn't that strong when hazy is it?

Nice! The "Hudson" album recently released by the jazz supergroup DeJohnette, Grenadier, Medeski & Scofield is the perfect soundtrack for this expedition.

Isn't this where the poor guy drowned in his kayak and his ex wife was found guilty of negligent homicide, because she allegedly sabotaged his rig? I was thinking that if the poor guy had a SUP, there is no way he would have drowned.
