Wing Configuration
« on: June 17, 2017, 10:56:58 AM »
The Crazy Foil set up is very adjustable and have been testing different configurations. While not on the website, I tried a bi wing set up with two wings (22 inch by 5 inch) making 220 square inch total. Had some nice success with this set up and was able to take it to the river and foil SUP!! Next step will be to try the 28 inch and 22 inch wings up front (250 square inches) before going to the tri wing.

I have looked at them in the past, its a interesting concept having the front foil lower than the rear to try and manage not blowing out the front wing.

Wake behind the boat. Flew between 8-9 mph.

I love it because it shows that there are so many variations that will all foil.
 $400 is great value too.

Am I right that the foil in back gets rid of the "buck off" factor from the big wing lifting you up and levering backward?

This seems to make a lot of sense knowing how surfers normally weight their feet. Are there downsides?

The ride was very stable and these pics are with the 22 inch on the bottom of the front and the 28 inch wing on top of the front. 250 square inches and a long wheel base made it fly at 7-8 mph's. i let go of the rope and surfed for a bit at 8.5 mph's. can't wait to see what this will do on the river.

The adjustability of this set up is a huge bonus.

You're right SCB, with the foils closer in area the lift is divided between them so there's less critical errors.
One foil may ventilate but it's not a complete fail if it does.
The adjustment idea is brilliant so you can adjust to your skill level.

I'm liking that a lot. The most efficient high-speed foil boats use laddered fins to extend the speed range and manage drag. As speed increases the foils leave the water with no sudden transition, drag is reduced and lift is maintained until the last foil starts breaching.

You also have the big advantage of more square inches of wing for less width and can still maintain an efficient aspect ratio and foil coefficient. Smart stuff.

awesome that youre flying but why cant just one of these wings work? they look huge! and so does that wake, which can only mean drag, pono laddered foils went out with tie dies and flared jeans. youll never have enough speed or power to worry about a laddered foil doing what its supposed to. look at the fishes and birdies i say, theyve had millions of years of r & d

Not if you're trying to get the wings well under the board. Wait, flared jeans are out? Damn.

This doesn't look much like flared jeans to me:

But yes, I know laddered foils is mostly a powerboat thing. And then there's this:

Pono- the big advantage was riding wings 22 inches wide and having a surface area of 220. A 22 and 28 inch wing was 250 square inches and I could let go of the rope at 8ish mph's.

Container- does the bi wing make more friction than a single big wing? Because my next test would be adding a additional smaller wings than bigger 32 inch wide ones... does the bi wing prevent pumping?

Plus being able to adjust the rear, mast, and front wing positions. What would be the ultimate set up for the slowest speed? That's the goal. Ride at 5 mph's.
