Flat water paddle on Surf SUP
« on: June 03, 2017, 09:39:02 AM »
Hi there

I have been surfing and flat water paddling an 8'10" Sunova Speeed for the past couple of months. I just got in from a 90 min. flat water paddle and tracked it with a new Garmin Fenix 5S sports watch. I was surprised at the average speed (4.8 km/hr)  as well as the maximum speed sprinting (14.3km/hr). Could these be accurate?

Thanks

Bob

I don't know if that Garmin Fenec 55 sports watch is accurate since I've never heard of it, but if it is accurate, that is some watch.
Blue Planet Duke: 10'5" x 32" x 4.5" @ 190 Liters (2 Dukes)
Sup Sports Hammer: 8'11" x 31" x 4" @ 140 Liters
SUP Sports One World: 11'1" x 30" x 4.5" @ 173 Liters
CJ Nelson Parallax: 9'3" x 23 1/2" x 3 3/16" @ 78.8 Liters (prone surfing longboard; Thunderbolt Technologies build in Red construction)

Average speed--yes, sprint speed--probably not. Danny Ching just broke the world speed record on a 14' racing SUP at just over 15Km/h. Connor Baxter, coming in second at 50.26 seconds for 200 meters is 14.32 km/hr. So I'd say definitely not.

I can touch 5 mph on my Foote 10'4" which is 8kph and I can hold 4 mph pretty consistently if I concentrate, though probably not for 90 minutes, about 6.4 kph. I'm big and heavy but the Foote is fast for a surfboard and I have a decent stroke. 8'10" has a hull speed of about 7kph, ten feet is closer to 8kph. Comfortable cruise is around 80 percent of hull speed so 5.6kph is a reasonable target for your speeed and 6.4kph for my Foote.
Foote 10'4X34", SIC 17.5 V1 hollow and an EPS one in Hood River. Foote 9'0" x 31", L41 8'8", 18' Speedboard, etc. etc.

Thanks Bill

Yes today average was 4.9km/hr and sprint max 7km/hr. I will use the goals that you have suggested for targets. (This is the third time I have tried to reply, two previous did not work with attachment). Surfing my average has been about 3.2 km/hr and on the wave max about 25km/hr. hope to try this board with a windsurf sail in the near future. The information that you provided is much appreciated.

Cheers

I bought a JP All Around 11'8" x 31" to play around with when I to to Texas and play in the small surf there. Neglecting how good a paddler I am, just out of curiosity I set up two floats 100 yards apart (fishing line) and made a couple of runs between them from a running start with the JP and my BlackBox UNO (14'x26.25"). Used my heart rate to keep the same relative energy. The BB was 9.5 km./hr. the JP 6.1 km./hr. This was on absolutely flat water on a lake in Colorado. I had a friend time the runs. I am 195 lbs.  Frankly the JP felt slower than it timed out.
No idea where the higher figure came from but it had to be off by 50%.
