My conclusion was lets see more than two runs and actually see the noise in the data. This doesn't tell us much. The weird kink in Matts trace will tell you the data possibly has a lot more error than you think.

^ well. We got at least some good noise among riders.

Which does make sense since boards are very people dependent.

"All of us were fastest on the 14x23 AllStar, slowest on the 12'6x24.5 AllStar, and intermediate in speed on the 14x24.5 AllStar. That is exactly what we would have expected because longer, narrower boards are inherently faster, at least in flatwater conditions where stability is not a limiting factor. What was interesting was how the board dimensions had more or less effect on our speed based on our body weight."

Your results match up to my tests in flatwater.  Though once conditions get rough in the ocean and loss of balance limits speed -> the 24.5AS can be a good option.  ;)

If the data is reliable, it certainly suggests that width is more important than volume...... at least upto paddlers of ~90kg.

conclusion: matt needs paddle lessons

Matt is a good paddler, but he had to restart his run on the 14x23 when he hit a stick and fell about a minute into the first attempt. That could have made him a little more tired by the time he did his complete 14x23 trial.

My own 14x23 trial might have been a little biased in the other direction since I was particularly psyched for that run and my stroke rate was a bit higher than it was on the 14x24.5... but about the same as it was on the 12'6x24.5.

If you're using a speed coach, calculate the stroke index. That might highlight the paddlers efficiencys.

the test results look spot on in the flat condition and yes 14 x 24.5 is an all rounder condition though depends on your weight and ability and the 14 x 23 might be better option.

Is the stroke index just the speed divided by the stroke rate? In that case mine is 0.154 for the 12'6, 0.166 for the 14x24.5, and 0.161 for the 14x23... Perhaps suggesting some kind of placebo effect where being on the 14x23 made me paddle with a faster stroke rate? Or maybe if the board has less resistance going through the water it means I'm finishing my paddle strokes faster and able to have a higher stroke rate with no additional effort. Board testing is complicated.
