Goldilocks fin?
« on: May 08, 2017, 08:02:07 AM »
I tried a new fin in my 14x23 Riviera yesterday that showed promise in terms of blending good handling and adequate stability in open water conditions. It actually helped me win a local race. http://jimbodouglass.blogspot.com/2017/05/sup-race-report-noodles-sup-luau-race.html The fin was an 18 cm "Natural Winner" fin I had borrowed from a Starboard AllStar. Oddly, while I've felt in other tests that the AllStar is under-finned with the same fin, it seemed just right in the Riviera. Maybe it's because the finbox is in a convex part of the hull on the Rivi versus in a concave part on the Starboard, which makes the effective depth of the fin longer on the Rivi. Or because the fin is further towards the tail in the Riviera, even with the fin all the way forward in the box, which may improve tracking. I can't keep borrowing the AllStar fin, but I'm thinking of getting an aftermarket fin with similar size and characteristics, maybe the Fins Unlimited Seagrass fin. http://store.finsunlimited.com/73quot-seagrass-s73.html

Here's the fin I usually use in flatwater, the AllStar fin I borrowed yesterday, and the fin I usually use in rough water but which I've come to think might be counterproductive.

Yeah kinda looks like the SIC 7.0 in some ways.  But best choice by far out of your 3 options.  Maybe a SB retailer or distributor will sell you just that fin.

Edit - I did use that fin a couple of times on the AS24.5 and it was fine.  No glaring issues upwind or DW.

I have a Prototype made for 404 that became this fin.  https://www.trueames.com/products/crossfire-stand-up-paddle-fin  Look pretty close to the SB.

It's not overhead to me!
8'8" L-41 ST and a whole pile of boards I rarely use.
