Stand on Liquid Store (Bend, Oregon)
« on: May 08, 2017, 06:07:51 AM »
Since I'm in the market for a new adjustable paddle in the 73-78 square inch surface area because of my surgically repaired shoulders, I've been looking at four different manufacturers. They are in no particular order:

1) Starboard Enduro 73.6
2) Ke Nalu xTuff Wiki 74
3) ZRE
4) Naisch (Alana 75 Vario, Carbon Plus 75 Vario)

While surfing the internet, I came across the "Stand on Liquid" site and they sell Naish paddles including the adjustable Alana 75 Vario (2 piece) and the Carbon Plus 75 Vario (2 piece). Their site says both paddles are in stock.

I want to call the shop and talk with someone who can actually put their hands and eyeballs on both of these paddles and ask a few questions like; is the Alana a smaller diameter shaft than the Carbon Plus? The adjustment range in inches. Finally, a nit picky question, but I'm going to ask it anyway. The Alana weighs 546 grams and the Carbon Plus weighs 537 grams so my logical question is "why"?

So has anyone had a business transaction with this shop and were you happy about your transaction which was shipped to your location (without damage)? Driving to their shop is not an option for me since Oregon is not around the corner from Texas where I live.

I cant comment comparitively- But I just got the KeNalu Wiki 74 Xtuf with a 100 shaft and Ergo T handle and love it.  Shaft width seems to be right about average for industry standards- not too thin- and not to thick and round not oval.  The hot glue and forever paddle policy really goes along way in my opinion.  I am always tinkering with components and have used the forever paddle option twice on 2 paddles.

strangely enough I have noticed my shoulders are MORE sore after paddling (Surfing only with this paddle) than using my Wiki 84 blade.  Not sure if that is increased Cadence or overall stroke count- because while paddling my shoulders feel better.

I have been using Werner's Nitro a 3 piece for about 6 years.  It appears from Werner's web site the Nitro is no longer being made and I believe this could be the replacement: http://wernerpaddles.com/paddles/stand-up/inflatable-sup/trance-95  This 3 piece paddle has worked well, and the refinement in quality is difficult to beat, especially after assembly and disassembly probably over 100 times.  The weight is good for a 3 piece.

NW,

Deals are fine, but deals are not the deciding factor as of this moment. What I'm really looking for right now is "direct info to confirm what I think I know" which is......does the Alana 75 Vario (2 piece) have a smaller diameter shaft than the Carbon Plus 75 Vario (2 piece), what is the adjustment range in inches which I think is 67"-89" and why does the Alana weigh 546 grams while the Carbon Plus weighs 537 grams? I know I'm being picky about the weight question since the difference is just 9 grams, but I'm just curious because the weight is a very small detail and I pick up on small details.

The first two items are the ones I need to know. If you don't know, that's okay. But since you're a Naish dealer, I imagine you have a direct phone number to Naish (or a dealer rep at Naish who has a territory you're in) because the phone number to Naish on their site isn't listed. Probably due to the Naish CEO there who doesn't want that info given out. To be absolutely crystal clear, I'm not asking for the Naish phone number. Just the info in my first paragraph.

BTW, the 9 grams of weight difference between the two paddles is not that important and is something I can live with.

You've mentioned two specialist paddle brands, and two that aren't. I'd go with one of the specialist padddle brands if I were you. If their paddles aren't good, they lose their house. Paddles are just a relative sideline for Naish and Starboard.

@Area 10

Let me play "Devil's Advocate" for a moment.

In your opinion, the Naish and Starboard paddles are both companies house sideline. Yet, both companies seem to have put lots of research into the blade shapes, blade angles, blade sizes, clamping mechanisms and shaft materials of their paddles (which includes the groove in the Naish shaft for no twist).

With that said; if both companies paddles (fixed and adjustable) weren't very good, then I suspect people would have doubts. And where there are doubts, those doubts would tend to make people leery of both companies "meat and potatoes" which is their line of sup boards.

Don't be so sure....Chinese made. Chinese designed in many cases. Slick marketing for sure. For example, Naish Sonic Composites China.

Look around, those who've been around the longest, just don't use paddles from board companies.

It's not an opinion that paddles are a sideline business for board manufacture, it's a demonstrable fact. That doesn't mean they don't give paddles some attention, but they certainly don't give them all their attention. Jim Terrel, Dave Chun, and Lane Mead wake up in the morning thinking about paddles. Robbie Naish and Svein Rasmussen don't. But if something works for you, go for it.

Get the Naish Carbon Vario. The groove alone is the big differentiator for adjustables. I use the Naish Makani Vario version without the groove. When I get pounded in bigger surf it sometimes goes out of alignment even if only a couple of millimeters. Worst feeling when you're in the impact zone with a paddle blade angled the wrong way.

Took me a while to find my post since it was moved from the General Discussion to the Regional - Northwest forum.

Just a guess on my part, but I imagine it's the clamping/adjustment latch which can't keep the extended shaft (to the grip), in a straight alignment. This seems to be the weak spot for adjustable paddles. But I need an adjustable paddle.

Not clear if you got what SaMoSup is saying -  that some Naish paddles have a groove in the shaft that keeps the handle and blade aligned. Curing the problem you're identifying.  Very convenient.

@Dusk Patrol

I got the point. SaMoSup has the Naish Makani Vario paddle without the groove.

I do like the groove to avoid twisting and it should easy to take apart and clean should any water get inside because where I sup surf, the water is mostly sandy brown with lots of very small pieces of sand in suspension in the water.

When I had my 220 length Werner "Little Dipper" all carbon small diameter shaft kayak paddles, they were push button to keep them aligned as well for adjustment. They were easy to clean too. I always took them apart (for storage) when not in use. Never had a problem with my Werner kayak paddles during the 13 years I used them.

BTW, I do the same thing (clean and storage) with my all carbon Werner 85 Trance sup paddle.
