APP World Tour event Japan
« on: May 06, 2017, 08:02:27 AM »
Great video of the APP world tour distance race here:

http://app.appworldtour.com/tour-dates/events-list/event/japan_pro-am/

Conditions looked tough. It was surprising how many of the top people were falling. I'll bet a few were wishing their board was a little wider....

Mo's board seemed to be coping with those conditions well. Has anyone here got one/tried one?

That's a great video to see lots of different boards in some messy conditions. I only watched a few minutes, but I liked the looks of the Fanatic Falcon and the Naish (Maliko?).

Tough conditions. Just shows that dugout deck boards are not good for the surf and buoy turns. Interesting that their big sponsor is Trump. ;)
It's not overhead to me!
8'8" L-41 ST and a whole pile of boards I rarely use.

Maybe this should be moved to the Shitshow thread.

I think their wetsuits might not be too popular is the US, but the majority of people will still buy them.

Mo had it on his surf nosed board but Connor with that bit more speed squirted forward.  His little stumble was the race tho.  Surf nosed narrow still seems to me to be a better choice for rough conditions.  But the cutting boof seems a touch faster on flat.  As noted before all the narrow board designs are fast with the right pilot anyways.  Put Connor on another brand and he would win there too.  Pretty much same with all the top riders male and female.

A 10. Am the proud owner of a Focus 14' Bluefin 26". They make a turbo 24.5" 14' as well. Am not sure of the widths on the 12'6" boards.

I suspect the hand shaped custom that Mo rides is slightly more refined than mine.

It's a great all water shape. Flat bottom with hard rails and the full nose that has become popular. I believe they did it before many others.

Yep Mo was killing it on his Focus.  He should have won that race.  Seemed to be more in control upwind and DW than Connor.  That AS cutting boof rolls a lot vs a surf nosed in steep waves.  To prevent the roll you can see Connor stepping back stalling and killing speed.  Only when the wave levels out can you really hammer.  Whereas Mo on his Turbo looks relaxed and stable on a wave upwind crosswind and DW.  He might have even been using a 23.5 wide.

Bigs your Race and BF should be a solid one two punch.  ;)

The sprints are always a bit of a bash up and mess at the corners.  Boothy got knocked down from behind in a heat and Casper had the lead but faded.  Mo took the win today on a borrowed board and is fast on any design.  The video was excellent at this event as you could see how different boards and racers handled the varied conditions from the rough distance to the flatter sprints.

"Mo Freitas was victorious in the sprint on a ONE board. Mo creased his own board in the semis, and even though he was still able to finish that race and make it through to the final, the world number five opted for something sturdier in the final."

I watched a lot of it. Way past my usual snooze time.

At one point AV said he was getting texts from Maine, and Rhode Island. At that moment there were only nine watchers. I think I know who those other crazies might have been.

Can someone splain the judging to me. Mo lost to Connor by one second in the distance, and was Mo (bad pun I know)
Bettah in the sprints. Why so far behind in points?

Yes, good question. Also, they said to give an edge in case of tie breaker
based on difficulty and I think Mo has the toughest time there having his
board broken just before the finals and having to deal with a loner board
from competitor and than ride an untested board in such technical conditions.

Just goes to show how much it is about the rider rather than the ride, but still,
at this level you need every edge you can get when all the big guns are on your tail...

Mo finished with 3 place points = 1 for sprint + 2 for distance
Connor finished with 3 place points = 2 for sprint + 1 for distance

Tiebreaker is the winner (or best place) of the distance event which Connor won hence he wins the overall.

In PPG I believe it's the best place in sprint that wins the tiebreak.

James Casey finished 3rd overall in Japan, on his Sunova Faast Pro
Nice follow-up to his win at Olukai last week!

Here are the final standings from Japan

The tie breaker is decided based upon race level of difficulty.
At Japan the long distance race held at much rougher conditions
hence the win went to Connor.
