Riviera RP 14' 25 wide QUESTION!
« on: May 03, 2017, 01:22:50 PM »
Hey everyone, I am looking to move up from 12'6 to 14' when I race. Usually mild conditions or flatwater. I am 5'11 and 180lbs. I have been racing a 12'6 x 30" for the past couple years and I am ready to move up to the 14' world. My only concern is the width. I know the Riviera RP comes in a 27" width which is what I was thinking of, but right now I have the chance to purchase the 14' RP in 25". Does anyone think it will be too big of a challenge coming from 12'6 x 30"? Does the board being 14' make it easier to deal with the narrower width? Any advice on going down to this width would be helpful!

THANKS

You should be fine, especially if it's the 2016/2017 model, which is very stable for its width.

You said 'Race'. At 5'11 - 180 a 27" wide board is a touring board. I'm 6'7 and I've raced 25" 14'rs... no problem. I'm getting an unlimited 19' x 23" in a few weeks. It's used, but I've raced it before. I have a 14' x 27" wide Hobie race board that I don't consider a 'Race Board'.
It's not overhead to me!
8'8" L-41 ST and a whole pile of boards I rarely use.

Ask to demo the 25.  If it feels stable enough sprinting and in some chop you should be good.  What might be good and stable for someone else might be completely crappy and unstable for you.  If you fall in a lot on your 30 then the 27 would be better.  If you never fall in -> then maybe the 25 would be ok.  Just depends on your stability level.

Is def a really good idea to ride diff boards to feel firsthand whenever possible.  Balance is a very personal matter -> especially pushing it in a race with slop and chop and wind when already fatigued.  Nothing the sort like paddling casually around on flat.  So choose wisely.  You know your stability level best.

I bought a used one earlier this year and fould easy to ride and very stable for the width . I was on a naish glide 14 x 27 prior to this .   I love how light it is and has a perfect handle .   Fun board !  I am 200lbs 6'1".

if you paddle manly in the lake or calm waters then 25" and if you want to do all condition board 27".
