The standard kite wings are thinner and have less area so they are faster and need more energy to lift. Those small waves don't supply more speed but the different water direction closer to the curl provides a lot more lift that speed does. The shorter mast is better suited to surfing proper waves than shoulder hopping, going sub 1 ft gives even better control.
 Nice pics, they convey how it feels to drive down the line, cutback and use the higher speed and glide of the foil.

wow great photos...that looks so fun..what will they think of next?.

question..are they towed into those waves or they paddled the board into a wave like a surfboard? 

We had some really good surf in Melbourne on Monday too..perfect SUP waves best session in a long time with perfect conditions.
