SUP Foil Practice - San Francisco Bay - boat session - video
« on: April 26, 2017, 12:17:23 PM »
I was a bit of a challenge to coordinate schedules and get a group together for a boat session.  Glad we did, I had the aha moment of thinking wow I am foiling and I get how fly the foil now.  Fun time, everyone was stoked (and terrified) to try it.  :)

wow very cool, thanks for posting.  I always wondered how they worked.  So interesting to see the ups and downs of foiling so close up.  I was amazed how quickly the foil got the board and surfer out of the water.  I could see why that could be terrifying at first..I can't imagine the jury potential from sharp foil.
well done!

Hi Clay,
I started to foil with a kite last year, and had a few sessions behind boats.
A couple of pointers for boat sessions:

At the end of the video you were riding directly behind the boat in the prop wash.  This is the worst place to try to foil.  The foil does not like the turbulence in the water.

Also, I found that the easiest way to foil behind a boat is to be just outside the wake or prop wash, on your heel rail.
Once at a speed that will barely bring the board up on foil, carve away from the boat slightly.  This will give you a little burst of speed, and let the foil fly.  To gently come back down to the water, just turn slightly toward the boat, and the board will come down off the foil.

Riding slightly at the side of the boat lets you lean back against the tow rope and this gives you more stability.  Not helpful for surfing, but makes your first foiling attempts easier.

I hope this helps.

Cheers.

Doug.

Nice video. Looks like everyone had a great time with their first ever foiling session.

BTW, it seems everyone was standing too far back on the tail of the board causing the nose of the board to do a 45 degree angle from the water. Did anybody move their feet a little closer to the middle of the board? Seems like that might have worked, but I didn't see anyone try that.

Thanks for the feedback.

Being further back on the board felt natural or necessary to lift the foil.  Maybe this is due to the rope pulling us forward and down, or prop wash, or wake, speed?

most likely cause of the board leverage, on my 13ft foil board your feet are about equal distance either side of the mast

Nice photo container!

towing speed for us was somewhere near 10mph, as that is the boat's top speed.

Thanks for the feedback

Great to see the shared stoke Clay. Amazed you could get the foil working behind that boat too! Awesome.
