11.5x32 touring sup
« on: April 23, 2017, 05:45:15 PM »
I know its been a while but I finally finished my first build. I built this one for my daughter.  Thanks Jrandy for all the info in your two builds, it helped a lot. I still had a few screw ups and I'll do few things different on my next build.  I would not paint the foam or install the plugs handle or fin box until after glassing. Shaping the nose was a pain in the butt. Right when I get it almost finished a scrap piece of wood falls and breaks the part of the nose off.

1st pic is after glassing, before hot coat. The 2nd pic is the finished product. We chose to go with a matte finish to help hide future scratches.   She loves it. It's a very stable board and tracks straight.

Rrnkp, breaking the nose off happens more often than you think. On two different boards I was shaping, I got a little too aggressive sanding the nose area, and snapped them off. A little Gorilla glue and they were back in action:)  Even easier to break when they're stringerless and 1 lb foam.
Nice first go. Your daughter will dig it. Good job dad!

It's not overhead to me!
8'8" L-41 ST and a whole pile of boards I rarely use.

Thats awesome man. I have to hand it to you guys who glass the long flatwater and race boards if you can glass those, you can glass anything.

You mentioned not painting the foam. What was the issue? Always curious as to the challenges folks face. Thanks for sharing.

I hit the foam a few times when I was sanding the laps. Had to add some spackle  and repaint not that big of a deal, just had to wait a few days for everything to dry. I"ll probably go with tinted resin next time.
