My guess is that you have a shallow shore which helps with the wave formation.

You are correct in your guess. The Houston ship channel, where the tankers have to stay in the channel, is 45' in depth and 530' in width. But; where the sup surfers are surfing the tanker's waves, they are not in the channel, the water depth is anywhere between 8' to 12' in depth. Galveston Bay is a very shallow bay. Think of s shallow dinner plate and you've got a perfect example.
