Looking for wave and wind SUP 'swiss army knife' if possible
« on: April 07, 2017, 08:58:48 PM »
Hello Zoners-
I am looking for ideas make/model/sizing for an all-purpose board that leans towards windSUP and wave SUS.
I am a beginner, 6'-3" and 240 pounds and hoping to end up around 220.
I have a 12'6" x wide flat water board so this would help round out the quiver.
Also, any advice on sailing rigs, etc. would be appreciated.
Thanks!

All the Sunova's have a mast foot screw. Wide selection of boards there. If I recall correctly the Supsports guy windsups.

SUS type boards will need good wind. For light wind windSuping the RRD Longrider looks like fun, Starboard has one for light wind too. But those won't be SUS boards.

The Naish 10'10" Nalu would work for you.

Fanatic boards tend to have mast foot inserts as well.

That 10'10" Nalu does look like a pretty good fit, great vid DJ.

Disclaimer:  I have no brand loyalty/affiliation

Kind of depends what you want, where you will sail and sup.

I have droppped mast boxes into several boards, and prefer long and thin boards as you are not likely to plane on any good surf sup...the glide of longer thinner gets you onto/into a wave quicker.

Having watched a number of sup sailing sytems, I have to say that the "Wind-Sup" from Exocet is the best planing/sailing sup   the 9'2" sails well, but depending on your sup-ability might be a bit small...there is a 10footer might be mo betta

Would define your sailing....If it is gong to be On-Shore, then I would really rethink things as there won't be a good solution short of the wind-sup.....

It truly is a compromise thing.....I thought for a while it was the way to be, but 2 things happened.....1.  My sup skills went up, and now i paddle until i can plane....2 I got a Goya 116 quad which allows me to shlog and sail in really light stuff.

Most fun on a sup/sail.....?     8-10 knots side off with long walls....weapon of choice for me is a Munoz 11'  flat rocker until a tail kick

Rigs?   For me at 200lbs, i'm pretty much always gonna use a 5.7 for such....easy to pump/flick around, and gives me enough pull.....i think for you anything over 6.3 would be alot....if the waves are fun you will get rinsed, and it's probably easier to break a mast sup-sailing than powered...you may be uphauling etc.

The really tough part is deciding when to you drop down to your full on sail kit?, and shlepping all that stuff can be a literal drag....there's very few carry options for a 10 foot board and sail

Too many for the rack
Some in the shack
Some under decks
Some have straps

Thanks everyone, I appreciate the advice and the video!

I am open to any suggestions, regardless of make/color/age/etc...

I will add that I will be most likely be 'lakebound' for the near future so 'wave' performance (3 hour drive one way) would probably be way lower on the list than all around or windSUP (three minute drive one way) capability. We usually have a little something for wind and 30 minutes away there is even more water and more wind and almost always someone sailing.

If there is no 'swiss army knife' board to form a 2-board quiver for my situation I am OK with it too. A three board (flat-wind-wave) grouping does not sound bad either and I could wait until waves are more available to start in with that portion of the quiver.

You can put a mast track in anything. My favorite WindSup board is the super-versatile Starboard 12'2". If you can find one of those someplace, grab it. They all have mast tracks.  The design is more than ten years old, and they only made them for a year, but everyone I've met who had one wishes they'd kept it--including Connor Baxter. Every time he sees mine he says "I should NEVER have sold my 12'2"." Surfs OK, downwinds OK, flatwater OK, sails OK and I fish off it. Not very stable at first, but you get comfortable with patience.

But really, almost any board will take a mast track. Just remember it's not a windsurfer and keep it on the water. I'd be nervous about sailing a thin-skinned custom or any of the cheap Asian pop-outs, but anything else is fair game. I added a mast track to an old JL 11'7" and it made a fine windsurfer. Giampaolo used to sail regular longboards with mast tracks. It's fun, and when you get into a wave you're on a surfboard, not a windsurfer that just won't surf. With standard surfboard rocker they won't really plane, but who cares. Don't cut a stringer to install a track--it works fine to offset the track to one side of the stringer. I've tried gluing a plywood stringer about 24" long to a mast track and installing it with a routed slot. Won't do that again. The ends popped through the glass.

For sails, you can use about anything, for light wind sailing, which big SUP boards excel at, go big. Six meters and up. I have a nine meter SuperFreak that will power my SUP in a light breeze.  Anywhere there's serious wind you probably want something around five meters. Aggressively shaped mylar sails will bang you around a lot and are generally less versatile as far as wind range goes. I favor the Maui Hot Sails Superfreak sails. In fact that's all I use. They show up used pretty often because they're very durable and people outgrow them and want something with more immediate performance. They've also been in production the longest of any sail I know of. They're Dacron panels with Spectra webbing.  http://www.hotsailsmaui.com/sail.php?uid=1  I think they are the ideal sail for the heavier pull of a windsup. Mega-tough. If you break a mast in a typical sail the sleeve is toast. For a superfreak, you pick out the pieces and can't tell it happened.

You can put a mast track in your flatwater board and sail it like one of Jim Drake's lake boards.

Foote 10'4X34", SIC 17.5 V1 hollow and an EPS one in Hood River. Foote 9'0" x 31", L41 8'8", 18' Speedboard, etc. etc.

You should check out the Sunovas. All most all Sunovas come with a windsurfing mast track as standard equipment.  There is also the advantage of their inherent durability due to their construction.

Snip...If I recall correctly the Supsports guy windsups...snip

Yup...in fact, was just out yesterday...regular strapped windsurfing over-powered on a 5.0m2 Super Freak...great sail for WindSUP...but, most luffable sails in the 5.Xm2 range will work well...

My Hammer design is the closest thing that you are going to find to the ultimate "one design"..."swiss army knife"...SUP...WindSUP...Wind foil...SUP foil...four way versatility...even had a guy use one for very light wind kiting...

http://supsports.com/standup-paddle-boards/hammer-series/

I designed it with a flatter and faster rocker...deep mono-concave in the nose and very deep double barrel going off of the tail gets the board up and planing much easier than any of the WindSUPs that I have been on starting back in 2005 when I first started installing mast tracks in SUPs...

https://youtu.be/mPoktHI3oHo

The Hammer is a very high performance oriented SUP...no problems in that department...big waves...small waves...nose riding...flat water paddling...etc...

Here's a couple of vid clips of my 8'11" Hammer in WindSUP mode...

Here's a testimonial from a Hammer WindSUP client in North Carolina...we've built them for folks from Oregon to Michigan...Vermont to Florida to Texas...etc...

Hey Wardog —

Board arrived with zero damage. You guys really know how to pack ‘em — wayyyyy better than other boards I’ve had shipped. I wrote the “concealed damage” language on the delivery doc, but I’m 99.99% sure there’s no damage.

The construction is outstanding — light and (seemingly) strong, and everything finished perfectly. Graphics are similarly perfect — great job!

Andy K***** (Manteo, NC)

2nd ride report – 6/13/15

Hey Wardog — All really good (although still no real waves): sailed it in 14-28 averaging 20 mph on flat water/chop with a super freak 6.7 overpowered lots of the time.
It planes up easily and stays upwind easily, plenty of volume and stability to tack, and has the lovely SUP quality of making it almost impossible to totally blow a jibe.

I still don’t have turning dialed — but I think it is less responsive to conventional rail pressure with toe or heel pressure (or I’m doing it wrong) but very responsive to moving your back foot to the leeward or windward rail. I haven’t dialed in keeping speed through a jibe in short-period chop, but I’m pretty sure I’ll get that figured out.

I was very pleased at how smooth it was in crappy jet-ski influenced chop. Can’t wait to sail it in bigger swell. This morning I paddled it in offshore ocean wind with almost no waves. In smooth water it paddled really well – I was able to paddle with and spin around and follow a pod of dolphins and also paddle back in easily with decent speed against the ~15mph wind.

I managed to catch 2 tiny waves and was pretty excited by how fast the board accelerated. It paddled pretty straight, too — much better than in the washing machine chop I tried it in earlier. So far, so great =— and it’s still a work of art!

Best, Andy

It works so good as a WindSUP that I never hesitated to build myself an 8'5" Hammer with a deep Tuttle box for windfoiling...and, now that I have a GoFoil, I'm starting to get some SUP surf foiling sessions with it...

We're building a 9'5" Hammer right now for a bigger client in Michigan right now who is in your weight class, with mast track and deep Tuttle box...he was looking for the "holy grail" of a do-it-all-well..."swiss army knife" board...and, I'm sure that it is going to exceed his expectations...

Thanks for the reply Wardog.
You are also very generous with information on your web site. I like how you compare outlines and rockers between your models for all to see.

More thoughts, more decisions...

No worries jrandy...

I included the rocker profile and planform outline graphics that you referred to...

While Admin is trying to fix the video link issue with SUZ...I'll try to re-post what I wrote with the You Tube vid clip links embedded...
I'll also put the vid clip links in quotation marks so that they could be copied/pasted if the embedding doesn't work...

Aloha Jeff,
Yes, it was a windy one on Saturday...gusting over 40mph while I was windsurfing...
Call the shop anytime for a weather report ahead of a trip down...

The soft top Hammer is SUPer high quality...built just like a regular Hammer epoxy board...full deep concaves to increase hydrodynamic effiiciency... then high quality EVA added to the deck...unbelievably fun board...not lacking on performance...

I tweaked the dims on them to accommodate a wider range of riders, kids, and dogs...;-)
8'11" x 33" @ 165 liters and 9'5" x 34" @ 185 liters...2 + 1 fin box setup...

Hi jrandy
I have heard good things about people using the Sunova Speeed as a wind surfSUP

Sunova puts mini mast tracks into most of their surf SUPs. (as opposed to the single screw mount)
They use the mast track because they want a very secure attachment to the board

Here's a link to pictures of a guy ripping waves on Speeed using sail rig
https://sail360.smugmug.com/Windsurf/2015/Aug-01-2015-wind-sup/i-Rt9MJZj

The Speeed is a great surfSUP in all conditions.
Super durable, very light and reasonably priced
I am 235 lbs and find the 9'5 Speeed to be super easy for me in all conditions.
I now am on a 9'2 for winter and rode an 8'10 in summer

Here's a few pics of my big self surfing the 9'5... I am not a wind SUP'r so check the link above for SUP surf/sail pics

Thanks 'Creek. It looks like you're looking good and having fun out there. Also thanks for the link to the Speeed under sail.

One of the locals has a used Starboard Start beginner board and 5.5 SUPer sail rig for sale for $650 US. Looks like the board needs 'stuff' -foot straps, centerboard, fins and I don't see a harness with the rig.  Would this be a good way to start getting into the wind?
